Engagement Engagement: discretionary effort Related to: commitment; what else? Divide employees into three groups Actively engaged; not engaged; actively disengaged Drivers of engagement Line of sight: strategy, etc., clear Involvement Information sharing Rewards and recognition What’s missing from this list?
Configuration V: Vertical Groups V1V2V3V4 AndreanaNatalieKalyanBen AnnaPiaMarkBrandon AshleyRosaRameshDrew ErinThangVindhanSean VannaStephen
Basics: Each V-Group Prepare to present its assigned basic, as follows 1. Hiring 2. Performance evaluation 3. Discipline 4. Termination Each presentation should Last about 5 minutes Have visuals: flipchart or board or… Highlight two or three points from section of chapter Include examples Best if at least one example is from a group member’s personal experience
Diversity: Each V-Group Discuss which two or three points you’d highlight Drawn from across the sections (Diversity, Harassment, etc.) Discuss “cases” from your own experience You don’t have to present to the rest of us
Diversity: Each H-Group Discuss which two or three points you’d highlight Drawn from across the sections (Diversity, Harassment, etc.) Discuss “cases” from your own experience You don’t have to present to the rest of us
Diversity: We are the C-group How was discussion of diversity different in the V and H groups? Do you think that discussion of “Basics” would have been different?
Free Software A matter of liberty, not price Free as in “free speech”, not as in “free beer” Refers to freedom to: Run the program Study how it works, and adapt it Note that this requires access to source code Distribute copies Improve the program, and release your improvements Compare Free Software and Open Source Software Each is a term, and a movement Why two different terms and movements?
“Software Should Not Have Owners” Written in 1994 by Richard M. Stallman Published online and in Free Software, Free Society In H-groups Compare notes as to how convincing you found the article How does it use each of the following approaches? Consequentialist; deontological; virtue ethics Which of them does it use most? Most effectively? How has group discussion of the article changed your thinking about it? In C-group What’s changed since 1994? Other comments on free/open source software?
Remainder of Chapter Configuration depends on clock Manager as a Lens The buck stops with managers But which managers? Managers are role models In what sense? Managing Up and Across … not just Down Any personal cases? Any comments on book’s account?
Looking Ahead Need to get you feedback on papers, because… Paper 2 is due next week Remember, you’ll each do 2 of the 3 papers Group presentations the week after that But let me know if the week after that is better for your group Usual closing... After which you might want to spend some time in groups
