Where to Start??? Hawaii!!  Location = Refueling point for merchants & military to China  Already have U.S. biz. there  Am.-owned sugar planters = own ¾ islands’ wealth = POWER  Am. planters wanted Pres. McKinley to annex (take over) Hawaii = no taxes on imports to mainland; save biz. $

Kingdom of Hawaii  Am. planters used political influence against King Kalakaua of Hawaii  Amend Hawaii’s constitution to ONLY allow wealthy landowners (Am. biz. owners) to vote  King died before signing; Queen Liliuokalani takes throne –  Won’t be bullied like her bro  “A Hawaii for Hawaiians”

Hawaii’s Fate  REVOLUTION – Am. biz. Owners overthrew Queen (w/help from U.S. Marines)  Pres. McKinley annexed Hawaii – 1898  Becomes Am. territory  Hawaiians not allowed to vote  Est. military hub for Pacific P.H.  Statehood (#50) = 1959
