His Inspiration His inspiration Basquiat loved art, sports, popular culture, and music. All those things influenced him and his way of painting.

Basquiat tries to express in his paintings feelings and concerns. - His feeling of rebellion against the situation of black people in the U.S. - His passion for music - His fear of death

Jazz ● Basquiat liked to paint while he was listening to jazz. It was another source of inspiration for him. Miles Davis

!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !! ● During a trip in Venisia, Basquiat fell in love with the music of Maria Callas. ● It was an other source of inspiration for him. ● The ''ha ha ha ha'' that we can see in this painting represent Maria Callas's voice that he was listening to when he painted.

Basquiat and boxers Basquiat admired black boxers like Cassius Clay (Mohamed Ali), Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson Here, the character is a boxer: he has got boxing gloves. He is the winner. His expression is scary, the red color on his body appears to be blood. All brush strokes and the lines bring up the violence and the movement. The boxer takes up all the painting to prove that he is huge and strong. Brush strokes: coups de pinceau Take up: occuper

He loved baseball, especially the famous player Hank Aaron and all the athletes he represented on this painting.

We can notice that a lot of famous sporstmen and musicians were often black. Basquiat was proud of his origins. He will be the first famous black artist in the USA in a country still affected by racism.

Leonardo Da Vinci and Picasso Basquiat followed two great masters of painting: ● Leonardo Da Vinci, especially for his anatomy studies. ● Pablo Picasso, this genius who revolutionized modern art. ● Picasso said, «I spent all my life learning how to draw like a child.» ● This painting is an « artistic quote», Mona Lisa... by Basquiat!

W as he alone for the creation of his paintings ? Yes and No:He was an autodidact, but he met a lot of celebrities from New York, which was the center of the art world in this time (since 1950). Let's talk about his friends !

They met in 1978, their first meeting lasted only a few minutes, in a restaurant in Soho. Then five years later, they were really introduced to each other. They will produce sixty paintings together. The « art » of Warhol is diverse, but always smooth and consistent, almost cold but Basquiat reflected passion, anger and a jumble of contradictory ideas. Meeting : rencontre Smooth : lisse Jumble : fouillis Anger: la colère

Keith Haring was an artist born in May 1958, in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was, like Basquiat a hudge idol of the 80s. Keith was really close with Basquiat, and he was more than an inspiration for him. He was one of his best friends.
