History Radial Ridge Cyclotron – since 2004 Scanditronix MC40 variable energy cyclotron maximum energies 40 MeV (protons or alphas) 20 MeV (deuterons) 53 MeV ( 3 He) Produces tracers for the Positron Imaging Centre; related research projects; 81 Rb production for sale to hospitals 3/15/2011Nigel Watson / NA62 Meeting
Recent previous work Abdul Ghaffar Al Lafi, PhD thesis, Birmingham Oct. 2009, “Cross Linked Sulphonated Poly(ether ether ketone) for the Development of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell” Used 11.7 or 12.5 MeV proton beam Spot size of approximately 10 mm diameter, scanned over an area of up to 32×32 mm 2, 30 m Havlar window 3/15/2011Nigel Watson / NA62 Meeting
For setup in Al Lafi thesis Irradiation dose evaluation for protons Average fluence over the whole irradiated area 9.4+/- 0.9 Cm -2 Max. dose (1 st PEEK layer) 37.9 ± 3.6 Mgy Exposure times mins 3/15/2011Nigel Watson / NA62 Meeting
Summary of proton irradiations 3/15/2011Nigel Watson / NA62 Meeting Irradiation dose evaluated using Cu foils “Most recent irradiations” noted over 32x32mm 2 at 500nA for 12 MeV p beam Assuming 10 min. Irradiation was for lowest p dose, 0.1MGy would correspond to ~30s. Quite short irradiation times, need to investigate directly with David Parker (in charge of entire cyclotron facility) and ATLAS colleagues at Birmingham, Sheffield and Liverpool who are preparing for tests to start in ~1 week.
Comparison of Bham MC40 vs. Karlsruhe – compilation by John Wilson for ATLAS studies (with Sheffield/Liverpool) – from April /15/2011Nigel Watson / NA62 Meeting
