Is change always good? Year 4 Autumn Term DT – Baskets Design - Make - Evaluate - Technical Children will use weaving to create a basket for a villager of Chembakolli. Children will think about changes in land use, comparing Ellesmere Port and Chembakolli. They will design a shape and use art straws to weave to create designed the shape focusing on usage and practicality. Geography History Science Digestion Children will begin todescribe the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans and how food changes as it is digested. Pupils should be introduced to the main body parts associated with the digestive system, for example, mouth, tongue, teeth, oesophagus, stomach and small and large intestine and explore questions that help them to understand their special functions. Children will work together to use a range of methods e.g. sewing, paper mache and to create a 3D digestive system to develop their understanding of the main organs involved. Art Literacy Texts Stig of the Dump Ug Horrible Histories - Stone age Mathematics Area and perimeter Data handling Time Measurements Developing research skills: using secondary sources and interpreting information. Land use Chn to learn about the different types of land use in Ellesmere port and how they may have changed over time. Key vocab: agriculture, leisure, residential etc. Chn to use maps (old and new) to compare change over time this will be enhanced with a visit to the library.Chn will comparee land use to Chembakolli - India and begin to develop an understanding why it is different. Farming Chn will begin to look at farming and changes in the farming system e.g. enclosed and open field. They will examine the changes effected land use and why it changed. Cezanne To enhance children’s understanding, links to Geography in particular farming and harvesting will be made. Children will look at Cezanne’s famous image ‘Apples’ to explore still life composition. Children will create their own still life composition, going through the process an artist goes through. They will concentrate on using sketching, water colours and photography. Children will create their own composition and sketch using their understanding of shading for effect. Stone age Chn will secure their understanding of the term chronology understanding theterminology BC and AD through the creation of time lines and key events. They will explore why historians use the terms Stone age, Iron age and Bronze age and the changes that occurred. Children will take a greater look at the changes that occurred in the Stone age for example from hunter gather to farmer. Links will be made in literacy through researching Skara Brae through comprehension and newspaper reports. Whole school projects - Black History month: the important changes in racism and equality.

Year 4 Spring Term DT Roman Chariot – Roman entertainment Design - Make - Evaluate - Technical Knowledge Children will make links to Roman entertainment to develop an understanding of the purpose of Chariots. They will use secondary sources to research shape, colours and materials to enhance their design. Children will use wooden dowels and strong card to create their structure. They will use metallic paints to create accurate designs. Music Geography History - Romans Romulus and Remus Children will firstly focus on the story of Romulus and Remus and thinking whether it still matters for historians today., British invasion. They will consider whether the Roman invasion of Britain mattered through exploring Roman baths, city names and the rebellion of Boudicca. Finally they will consider the overall importance of the Roman empire and whether they still matter today. Science States of matter Children will compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases, learning their properties. They will begin experiment what happens to some materials when/if they change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C). Water cycle Making links to geography, they will identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temp - link to Geography topic. Art Roman Mosaics (3D work) Children will use 3D ceramic tiles to create their own mosaics. They will improve their understanding of art and design by designing their own mosaics using sketching and water colours and creating their designs using ceramic tiles. They will learn about why mosaics mattered in the Roman times and why they still matter today. Literacy Texts Information texts relating to the Romans Mathematics Estimating volume Roman numerals Measurements Time - recording Money - Roman and now York Residential – February 2015 Physical Geography: Children will make links to the science topic and examine ‘the water cycle’ Children will understand the importance of water and the different stages involved. They will identify the different states of matter involved in the cycle. Human Geography: Fieldwork: Mapping (Chester/Cities) Children will se maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate cities such as Chester and York to describe features of the cities and compare. They will use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in a local area using sketch maps, plans and graphs. Roman chants and songs Children will become familiar with AGFC notes. They will listen and learn Roman songs and chants in an ensemble context using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression. Songs: ‘Hadrian’s wall’ ‘Roman clothes.’

Links to history - music in the 1980's Music History - beyond 1066 The 1980's Children will develop an understanding of lleisure and entertainment during the 80‘s. They will compare to modern day, thinking about changes over time. This will develop an understanding of Britain over time, looking at causality. Links will be made to art and Science – Electricity Electricity – Appliance, conductors and insulators, circuits, switches and buzzers. Pupils should be taught to: identify common appliances that run on electricity. construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers. identify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery. recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit. recognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors. Art Andy Warhol Chn to develop an understanding of who Andy Warhol was and is relevance to art. They will examine the techniques he used, looking at colour and structure. Chn will design their own art piece in the style of Andy Warhol as a large piece on either card or canvas. Chn will experiment with paint and pastels. Literacy Texts Information texts Mathematics Shape - 3d and 2d Measurements - log boxes: brightness and pitch. Data handling - recording results on line graphs. Science Sound Pupils should be taught to: identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating. recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear. find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it. find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it. recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases. Make earmuffs from different materials? Own instruments - links to music regarding pitch and volume.
