Essential Questions:  What are the basic elements of a short story and a personal narrative?  What literary techniques do writers use, and how do these techniques impact meaning in the text?

Skills: What should I be able to do?  Recognize and identify the literary devices and literary elements within a text.  Perform literary analysis, describing how an author’s techniques influence a reader’s perception of a text.  Create an original piece of writing that shows intentional and effective use of literary devices and literary elements.

Assessment: How will I demonstrate what I have learned?  Write a polished literary analysis essay about one of the short stories that we read in class.  Compose a piece of creative writing where you incorporate what you learned about literary elements and literary devices in your own short story or personal narrative.
