Comparison of Functional Training, Weight Training, and Traditional Physical Education Activities Among High School Students Dale F. Blair, MS, ATC, CSCS Allen Noble Adam Noble Andrew Behler Wenatchee High School Wenatchee, Washington

The Study n Three advanced high school sports medicine students undertook this research project. n Goal of study: To compare the effects of functional training, weight training, and traditional physical education activities on freshman physical education students.

Methods n 43 freshman were randomly divided into three groups: Ô Six males and six females participated in functional training Ô Nine males and eight females comprised the weight training group. Ô Seven males and seven females were in a traditional physical education program.

Methods n Pre-testing for upper body power (3 kg. medicine ball toss), agility (20 yard shuttle run, and speed (40 yd. dash) n Groups worked out three days a week for 40 minutes (traditional physical education activities the other two days of the week). n Post-testing on same three measures followed an eight week program.

Functional Training n Definition: A series of exercises that incorporate functional movements (multi-planar: sagittal, frontal, transverse).

Functional Training Exercise Examples n Multi-plane plyometrics

Functional Training Exercises n Squats with punches

Functional Training Exercises n Multi-plane partner-ball tosses (frontal, sagittal, and transverse )

Functional Training Exercises n Plyometric pushups with medicine ball

Functional Training Exercises n Sit-ups with medicine ball toss

Functional Training Exercises n Lunges with medicine ball press

Traditional Weight Training n Squats n Hip sled n Quad extensions n Hamstring curls n Bench press n Upper body free weight exercises

Traditional Physical Education Activities n Basketball n Volleyball n Soccer

Results--- (Percent improvement)

Discussion of Results n The 3 kg. overhead ball toss showed statistically significant improvement on one-way ANOVA (p=.05). n Other tests did not show significant differences among the various workout programs.

Limitations of Study n High school freshmen u Physical and mental maturity u Lack of Interest u Exercise Technique n Absences n Injuries

Further Study Regarding Functional Training n Older athletes n Functional training in conjunction with weight lifting n Evaluate aerobic endurance, flexibility, vertical jump, long jump, subjective compliance, etc.
