Using Homework Design Question 3 – Element 16: How do teachers design homework to deepen their students’ knowledge of informational content or, practice a skill, strategy, or process?
Before we begin… Before we begin talking about element 16, let’s be sure that there is an understanding about how the elements in Design Question 3 are related. This is important as you plan your lessons. Directions: watch the video on the next slide. Please identify the difference between the purpose of Design Question 2 and Design Question 3.

How does Design Question 3 differ with Design Question 2? You should have noticed that: The purpose of Design Question 2 is to introduce new material to students while The purpose of Design Question 3 is to give the students an opportunity to practice using material that was previously taught so that they deepen their understanding; therefore, Teachers have to perform Design Question 2 before Design Question 3. Now let’s talk about element 16, specifically.
Review Teacher and Student Evidence NOTE: This list of evidence is not all inclusive but is instead a list of possible examples.
Review Scale for Element 16
Desired Effect in the Students The desired effect is, “Students’ understanding of content and/or practice skills, strategies or processes is deepened with appropriate homework.” To receive an Innovating rating, the teacher must monitor and make accommodations so that every student in their classroom achieves this desired effect. In other words, the teacher must make necessary accommodations to ensure every student has the opportunity to use homework to deepen their understanding and/or ability.
Task While watching the below video, answer these two questions. 1. What are types of homework (strategies) that deepen students’ knowledge? 2. What are types of homework (activities) that enhance student fluency of procedural knowledge? Video Questions and Answers Q1: What are types of homework (strategies) that deepen students’ knowledge? A1: Making comparisons, classifying, creating similes and metaphors, creating analogies, and error analysis tasks Q2: What are types of homework (activities) that enhance student fluency of procedural knowledge? A2: Exercises, activities, performance-based tasks, or project-based tasks

Task On the next slide is the teacher and student evidence. What evidence did you see and were able to document? Use this to rate the teacher as you walk through the next few slides.

How to Rate Teacher Evidence You can only give credit for what you see. Teacher Evidence Teacher communicates a clear purpose for homework. The teacher told her students she wanted them to extend their learning. Teacher designs a well crafted homework assignment that allows students to practice and deepen their knowledge independently. It is safe to assume that the teacher already taught her students what a “telling sentence” is and how to fill out a four-square. This homework assignment is an opportunity for her students to practice writing telling sentences and filling out four squares independently.

Review Scale for Element 16 to Rate the Teacher
How we Rated the Teacher We rated the teacher as DEVELOPING. She assigned the homework for the purpose of practicing skills (writing telling sentences and filling out a four square). However, in this short video, there is no evidence that she monitored her students to ensure they actually practiced the skills. To receive an Applying rating, the video would need to show us evidence that she was monitoring her students for their understanding of the homework. This could occur that day if she had students repeat back to her the task and its purpose or it could occur the following day. See the next video for how the following day would be assessed.
Video In the last video, we saw day 1 were a teacher assigned homework. Now let’s look at a video where it’s day 2 and the teacher is following up on her students’ homework. Log in to Then search “Protocol Video: Using Homework (Dance)” in the Resource Library. After watching the video you will be asked to identify the steps for using homework in a meaningful way instead of just for busy work.
Video Question and Answer Q: What are the steps for making homework meaningful? 1. Explain meaning/purpose to the students. 2. Tie the homework to your learning goal. 3. Monitor to ensure everyone completed the homework. 4. Share or presentation of homework to ensure students’ understanding and/or practice was deepened.

What is next? 1. Identify a lesson you have coming up in the next week that requires students to practice and deepen knowledge. 2. Choose one new homework strategy to utilize. 3. If you want an Applying rating, determine how you will monitor the majority of the students to make sure they are able to benefit from practicing and deepening their knowledge by using homework. 4. If you want an Innovating rating, determine how you will adapt and monitor to make sure that EVERY student is benefiting from practicing and deepening their knowledge by using homework. What can you do to ensure students who don’t normally do their homework, actually complete this homework?
