Total Participation Techniques Section I

Total Participation Techniques “Total Participation Techniques (TPTs) are teaching techniques that allow for all students to demonstrate, at the same time, active participation and cognitive engagement in the topic being studied.” Page 7

An Overview—TPT Strategies Two Integral Components: 1.Active participation by all students 2.Higher-order thinking— This takes students beyond simple engagement to being cognitively engaged and to thinking deeply.

What Do You Think? 1. True or Not True The drop out rate is as high as 25% in the United States. 2. The #1 reason cited by drop-outs for quitting school is: A.Being behind in reading and math for their grade level B.Boredom pages 4--5

“By the time many students hit middle school, disengagement has become a learned behavior—not for all, but for some, especially those that hold little social capital among their peers. Too many are either resistant to engagement, afraid to engage, or afraid to appear too engaged.” Page 8 (Manheim Central Middle School)
