Why are we here Almost 452,000 Danes live with cardiovascular disease Cardiovascular disease is one of the most common causes of death in Denmark. Every fourth death (13,000 deaths per annum) is caused by cardiovascular disease More than 94,500 adult Danes are treated in hospital each year for cardiovascular disease It costs society approximately DKK 7 billion each year to treat and medicate patients with cardiovascular disease Approximately 450 children are born each year with heart disease

What we do… Research: We fund scientific research into cardiovascular disease to improve prevention and treatment Prevention: We prevent cardiovascular disease through health-promoting activities and information Patient support: We represent the interests of heart patients and their families by providing counselling and information and through health policy initiatives

Research The Danish Heart Foundation spends approx. DKK 25 million supporting research each year The Danish Heart Foundation are among the largest contributors to research on cardiovascular disease HjerteTal.dk – an online encyclopedia on occurrence, mortality and treatment of cardiovascular disease in Denmark from 2006 and onwards The Research Department of the Heart Foundation is doing independent research in cardiovascular epidemiology and register-based research

Prevention The Danish Heart Foundation develops and implements preventive activities targeting people with cardiovascular disease We focus on smoking, exercise, diet and stress We promote the spread and knowledge of life-saving first aid

Patient support Patient clubs: The Children’s Club, The Heart and Lung Transplant Club and the ICD Club Counselling at 3 support centres, 9 satellites throughout the country and on Heart Line, the free telephone help line A nationwide network of local associations with voluntary workers and patient counsellors The Danish Children Heart Foundation fundraises in aid of children with heart conditions and their families Dissemination of knowledge about cardiovascular disease, its treatment and after-care Political advocacy to improve conditions for patients with cardiovascular disease
