Monday, Aug. 15 DO NOW: Get out your Syllabus/Lab Safety Contract to turn in (if it has been signed) If you don’t have it, get out your Agenda and fill in Syllabus and Lab Safety Contract due by Friday!! Get out your Composition Notebook. Label with your NAME and PERIOD Thank you for sitting quietly while we begin

PLAN Identify the observation, hypothesis, experiment, and conclusion component in a lab experiment. DO We will set up our Scientific Journal. We will do a card sort to review the Steps of the Scientific Method. We will discuss the Steps of the Scientific Method. We will begin an inquiry activity to practice using the observation and hypothesis steps of the Scientific Method.

Setting up your Science Journal: 1.On the bottom right-hand corner of the first page, put a number 1. 2.On the back of that same page put a number 2. 3.Continue this until you have numbered to Turn back to page 1. 5.At the top, write: Table of Contents You are now ready to begin writing in your Science Journal. 7.We will begin with our first item of the year on page 11.

At the top of Page 11 in your Science Journal, write The Scientific Method. Then copy the underlined statements on the next few slides. _____________ __________________________________ ____________________________ ______________________ ________________

___________________ _________________________ ______________________ ____________________

_________________________________ The problem is written in the form of a testable question. Examples of testable questions: Which flavor of gum lasts longest? What is the effect of cigarette smoke on house plants? Which brand of toilet paper is the strongest?

_________________________ _______________________ ____________________________

Practice with Hypotheses What is the effect of cigarette smoke on household plants? If I test to see how cigarette smoke affects household plants, then I will find that … OR If I put plants in an environment with lots of cigarette smoke, I will find that …

Practice with Hypotheses Which brand of laundry detergent is best at getting rid of stains? If I test a variety of laundry detergent to see which one gets rid of stains the best, then I will find that…

Practice-Write Hypotheses Which brand of soap gets rid of germs the best? What is the best amount of sunlight and water for growing violets? Which brand of sneakers will allow you to jump the highest? How are student grades affected by the amount of time spent viewing television?

__________________________________________________________________ _______________________________ Should test only ONE variable at a time.

Conclusio n 1.Tells if hypothesis was correct or not. 2.Explains WHY hypothesis was correct or not. 3.Uses data from the experiment as evidence to support.

Draw this table on page 12 of your Science Journal. You will complete this table as you do the next activity. Observation Hypothesis ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6

Exit Slip: What is the difference between a hypothesis and a conclusion?

Tuesday August 16 th DO NOW What is the difference between an observation and a hypothesis?

PLAN Identify the observation, hypothesis, experiment, and conclusion component in a lab experiment. DO We will complete the Checks Activity to practice using the observation and hypothesis steps of the Scientific Method. (10 mins. max) Briefly review possible hypotheses. Discuss variables in an experiment. Complete Sling Shot Lab.

Variables in an Experiment “I” changeMeasured Constant Stays the same

MIX DRYDRY

Independent Variable: “I” change it Manipulated variable MIX

Dependent Variable Depends on the independent variable It is the Response DRY

Sling Shot Lab Materials: slingshot, dice, meter stick, masking tape Distance of pulled band. Distance dice traveled. 2 cm 3 cm 4 cm

Sling Shot Lab 1.Gather materials 2.Place the slingshot at the “starting position” mark this with a piece of tape. 3.Use the meter stick determine the distances for rubber band pull back (2 cm, 3 cm, and 4 cm) 4.Place the dice on the rubber band and pull back to the first distance, release and observe the distance it travels. 5.Measure and Record onto the data table. *Repeat for remaining rubber band pull distances.

Homework: Use the data collected by your group to: Make a line graph (remember to label) Identify independent variable Identify the dependent variable

DO NOW

Wednesday August 17 th DO NOW Students in science class wanted to find out if the temperature in the room had an effect on the amount of time the hamster slept during the day. Give the… 1. Independent Variable 2. Dependent Variable 3. Hypothesis

PLAN Identify the observation, hypothesis, experiment, and conclusion component in a lab experiment. DO Check Homework (Sling Shot Graph) Go over Sling Shot Graph and Conclusion Practice identifying variables and graphing

Practice Problem #1- Thickness of Tree Rings

Friday August 19 th DO NOW Please copy the following onto the Thursday box of your DO NOW sheet. If you run out of room, continue on the back of your sheet. TEACHER-LED INSTRUCTION Look at and listen to the teacher Take notes, if applicable Raise your hand if you would like to contribute to the discussion or have a question INDEPENDENT WORK Work diligently on assignment, Level 0, unless instructed otherwise Sharpen pencil/throw something away ONLY when given permission

PLAN Identify the observation, hypothesis, experiment, and conclusion component in a lab experiment. Identify the variables in an experiment. DO Questions and take up Homework (Practice Problem #2) More Variables and Graphing Practice ?????Perform Alka-Seltzer Experiment???? Graph and Conclusion

Alka-Seltzer Experiment Problem: Does temperature affect the time it takes a chemical reaction to occur?

Hypothesis: If________________________ (IV), then____________________________(DV)

Variables: Independent Variable _______________ Dependent Variable __________________ Constant Variables ______________________________________

Expectations: Work only with your group. Use the Cellphone as a TIMER Clean up stations when finished Return materials GROUP/LAB WORK Be respectful to all group/lab members All members are expected to do their job and contribute to the activity

DO NOW Monday, August 22 nd On page of your journal, tape this week’s DO NOW sheet. Write the following in your journal in the Monday box of your DO NOW sheet. Control Group: Group that gets the normal treatment Experimental Group: Group that gets a treatment that’s not normal Identify each group in this experiment: A student wants to know if fertilizer affects the growth of plants. So she sets up two groups. One group of plants receives 5 grams of fertilizer at the beginning of the experiment. The other group of plants receives no fertilizer at all at any time during the experiment.

PLAN Identify the observation, hypothesis, experiment, and conclusion component in a lab experiment. Identify the variables in an experiment. DO We will answer questions about and take up the Alka-Seltzer Lab We will watch a short BrainPOP video about the Scientific Method. We complete a Scientific Method Station Rotation. We will read and answer questions on the Scientific Method LTF Worksheet. There will be a QUIZ tomorrow over the Scientific Method and Variables.

Getting Ready Divide page of your journal into 7 different blocks. At the top, write Scientific Method Station Rotation. ________________________ Scientific Method Station Rotation

You will work with the people at your table to complete the task at your table. Then you will rotate clockwise to the next table and complete the task at that table. You will continue this until you have rotated to all tables and completed all tasks. You will have 4 minutes at each table.

Homework: Laying the Foundation #2 Scientific Method Worksheet Read carefully and answer questions 1-9
