Update: July 7 th, 2016 Investing in the Rideau Canal Bobs Lake Dam Project

National Program of Work to Invest in Parks Canada Infrastructure Across all Parks Canada sites, the Agency has infrastructure and assets in excess of $16 billion – National Asset Review - Identified those assets in need of rehabilitation or replacement 2013 – 3 rd party validation– confirmed the findings of the internal review As a result of these findings, the Government of Canada earmarked more than $3 billion over 5 years for investment into existing Parks Canada infrastructure and assets.

Investments into the Rideau Canal The Rideau Canal’s 202 km of navigable waterway requires large capital assets to support its operations. These include 50 locks, 40 dams, and 26 bridges. The national review process identified $105 million in potential work along the Rideau Canal. To date, $103.3 million of projects have been announced for the Rideau Canal as part of the national program of work.

Bobs Lake Dam

Bobs Lake Dam – Historical view History Dams at Bolingbroke date back to 1821 Government of Canada purchased the dam site in 1870 In 1871 the size of the dam was significantly increased and Bobs Lake’s place as a reservoir for the Tay and the Rideau Canals was enhanced. Concrete dam dates to around 1930 – several major repairs and rehabilitations to date

Bobs Lake Dam – Today In June 2015, major rehabilitation work was announced for Bobs Lake Dam Following geotechnical analysis of the existing dam site, the rock was determined to be of poor quality. As a result of this analysis, in May 2016 the Government of Canada announced additional resources in order to complete the full replacement of the Bobs Lake Dam

Bobs Lake Dam – Replacement New dam will be located about 40m upstream of existing site near the location of an older dam Water management strategy / approach will not change due to construction While design is not yet complete, a second spillway will be added in order to meet current Canadian Dam Association safety guidelines. A second spillway will not alter water management practises, it is being added as a redundancy in case one spillway is blocked (for ex.)

Bobs Lake Dam – Next Steps There had been a small chance for construction in late summer 2016 – however we are now targeting Summer 2017 Further investigation and preparation work to come: Indigenous consultation and Archaeological investigation Fisheries Permit Completion of Detailed Impact Assessment Enhanced environmental investigation and design of stream channel rehabilitation between old and new dam Completion of design, tender and award contract

Bobs Lake Dam – Next Steps Community presentations scheduled for July/August 2016 will be offered in Spring 2017 to ensure an exchange of current and accurate information To be added to our community engagement list and to receive direct updates about the project please and include “Bobs Lake Dam engagement list” in the subject line
