TUESDAY JOURNAL If there were some type of apocalyptic disaster – and you survived – what are the strengths/skills you have that would help you keep on living? Make a list and explain the qualities that you choose.

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE A ZOMBIE VIRUS IS OVERTAKING THE EARTH; IT WAS INITIALLY TRANSMITTED BY BITE. HOWEVER, IT IS NOW AIRBORNE AND IS SPREADING LIKE WILDFIRE. IT HAS NOT YET REACHED GEORGIA BUT IS EXPECTED TO DO SO WITHIN DAYS. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ANY UNVACCINATED HUMANS WILL BECOME INFECTED, DIE, AND BECOME UNDEAD. DR. ZOYVITCH FROM ATLANTA’S CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) HAS THE ONLY REMAINING VIALS OF THE VACCINE. HE HAS DEEMED CERTAIN COMMUNITIES “SURVIVOR “COMMUNITIES, AND OURS IS ONE. BUT ONLY 4 OF US WILL RECEIVE THE VACCINE AND LIVE IN IN HIS COMPOUND.

In order to be one of the chosen 4, you will have to use your best persuasive skills to convince Dr. Zoyvitch and the Selection Committee that you have valuable skills and resources to offer the community of survivors who will be left. However, there is a catch. You are not... you. ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE

SAY WHAT?!?! You will be given an identity. You will need to decide on the gender and name of your character. THIS INFORMATION MUST REMAIN CLASSIFIED. ANY BREACH OF THIS INFORMATION WILL DISQUALIFY YOU FROM THE COMPETITION.

EXAMPLE You are a 41-year-old dentist with schizophrenia. ProsCons

TASK 1 Complete the Character Identification form. You will need to choose your new name and gender. Consider the strengths and weaknesses that your identity may offer to a new community. How can you help? How would you hinder?

WHAT TO DO IN PERSUASIVE WRITING *BE AWARE OF YOUR SOAPSTONE. *USE RHETORICAL APPEALS. *USE RHETORICAL TECHNIQUES. MAKE SURE YOUR ARGUMENT IS STRONG.

TASK 2 You will need to consider your SOAPSTone and use of persuasive appeals before you write to Dr. Zoyvitch. Resources will be provided to help you do this. Dr. Zoyvitch will need to see your critical thinking skills, so this will be turned in along with your letter to him.

WEDNESDAY WARM-UP Write down everything you can remember about how to write a formal business letter. Think about: heading, salutation, language, closing, etc.

TASK 3 Write Dr. Zoyvitch a formal business letter, using Aristotle’s rhetorical appeals and hopefully some other persuasive techniques as well. Dr. Zoyvitch is a very busy man so you must make sure that your letter covers all the important parts in as convincing a method as possible.

SAMPLE LETTER FORMAT Dear Dr. Yoyvitch and the Selection Committee, Center for Disease Control and Prevention ATTN: Survival Selection Committee 1600 Clifton Road Atlanta, GA Character Name 2002 American Way Columbus, GA 31909

WHEN YOU’RE DONE… Make sure you put the EXACT code that’s on your character identification form on your letter. Your real name should not be written anywhere on the letter. Staple your handouts from yesterday (character identification form, SOAPSTone, and EPL planning sheet) to your letter.

THURSDAY WARM-UP Make sure you are sitting in groups of 3-4 – not 1, not 2, not 5. When your group is set, make sure everyone in the group knows each other’s name. Talk to each person in your group and learn one interesting fact about them.

TASK 4 To prepare for the Selection Committee, you have been hired to pre- screen letters from the candidates. You will need to reach each letter at your table and use the chart provided to you to record notes on the letter’s use of ethos, pathos, and logos. Based on the persuasive appeals and the writer’s argument, rate the letter from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) and explain why. If the other members of your pre-screening group don’t finish as quickly as you, please be patient. You have 20 minutes to complete this task.

TASK 5 Working with your pre-screening group, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each letter you viewed. Collectively decide on the one best candidate from your pre-screening group and record the code on your charts. Make sure you select the one that has the most merit as both a possible survivor and as persuasive writer.

TASK 6 Each pre-screening group will present to the entire Selection Committee their candidate. Your job on the Selection Committee is critically important. Please use your chart to record the candidate’s use of EPL and other persuasive techniques. Give each candidate a final rating of 1 to 5 and explain why.

TASK 7 Record your votes for the top 4 survivor candidates on your voting ballot. As part of the democratic process of our country, the votes will be tallied numerous times for accuracy. The selected candidates will be notified ASAP.
