Students MUST: Analyze-Discuss-Evaluate-Justify and Explain their answers. Take away: Thinking deeply is hard. Let it BE hard, help them talk it out.. 1. Requires Critical Thinking

2. Integrated Learning The common core emphasizes learning across the curriculum. (reading, math, Science and S.S. may be combined into one task) Take Away: Provide students with problems that pertain to real life situations and contain more than one academic area. Ex: STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math)

The common core emphasizes proof and evidence. Take Away: Class work and tests require students to explain how they know. 3. Showing how they Know

What is Flex Grouping? Students are grouped with other students with like abilities. Benefits Builds Confidence in students & Creates a Safe Environment for learning

Here is how it Works A common assessment is given for reading and math. Students are placed in flex groups for reading and math based upon the results of this assessment. Each teacher will provide the necessary instruction for her group of students in order for them to be successful. This will look different in each classroom. We will re-assess the students before each new unit and will make changes at that time based on student scores, if there is a need.

If your student needs more instruction on phonics in reading that teacher will put a stronger emphasis on phonics. If your child has a stronger background in phonics, there will be less instruction on phonics and a stronger emphasis on comprehension/vocabulary.

Flex grouping is based on skill sets. ( it NOT about being a high, average or low student) Some kids will grasp certain concepts better than others. Therefore, if they need extra help we can spend more time on that concept. If they have already grasped the concept then we want to move on.

English Language Arts Reading Writing Language Listening & speaking Math ELA Math

► Literature--Fictional stories (setting, plot, characters, analyzing text, authors point of view) As students give the answers they must show evidence and prove their answer. ► Informational Text--non-fiction (main idea, details, asking answering questions, in depth discussions) ► Foundational Skills--phonics (short/long vowels, consonant blends/ initial, medial and final sounds, segmenting words, sight words, decoding words)

carefully read cite specific evidence in a story read and re-read, analyze text highlight important information to prove their answers. have rich and rigorous conversations, Students will develop skills for making arguments for or against a point of view in a text. old a respectful conversation

Opinion Writing: students state their opinions, supply a reason for their opinion and provide a closing sentence. Opinion Writing may also be based off of literature (persuasive writing) Informative Writing: Students name a topic, supply some facts and write a closing sentence.

Recount Narrative: Students recount two or more sequenced events, including some detail and using transition words. (first, next, then, finally) Imaginative Narratives Included opening/closing sentences Research Writing: Students will explore a number of “how-to” books/topics and use them to write a sequence of instructions. Students will gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

Students find the answers and create the answers. Incorportate math problems to real-world situations Students will explain & share their answers Students will find more than one way to come up with answer Less Teacher Talk
