Speaker 1... I used to like driving into town on a Saturday morning. You know, stop for a cup of coffee... do some shopping.... Now, it’s impossible. It takes me about an hour to find a parking spot. It’s not that I’m impatient, but I really don’t like wasting time. It’s much easier to leave the car at home and take the bus or train.

Speaker 2... We get a lot of customers complaining about the bus and train services in this town. Most people are fed up with waiting around for hours. So, car sales have gone up in the last two or three years. Of course we know that gas is expensive, but a good car will get you from one place to another much more cheaply than the bus. And it’s quicker, too. If you get a new car it doesn’t cause as much pollution... anyway, some of these old buses are not exactly environmentally friendly, are they?

Speaker 3 I walk everywhere, or I take my bike. People who drive cars think that it is fun to speed along the roads and then to park their cars wherever they want. Personally, I think that drivers should learn some manners. Most of the time when I’m on my bike, drivers can’t wait and they start honking or shouting at me. And the way they drive... they aren’t very careful about giving a biker space when they are passing. When drivers learn to take responsibility, like walking short distances, or taking the bus, then our roads will be a safer place.

Speaker 4 I love driving, but a few years ago I decided to sell my car and not buy another one. We live in an old town with some fairly ancient buildings... I could see how over the years they were getting dirtier and dirtier. It’s the pollution that comes mainly from cars. It damages our lungs, so imagine what it does to the buildings! So, now I go everywhere by bus and train.

Unit 1, Chapter 1, Exercise A,, Page 12 I will never forget the time I spent ten hours at New York’s JFK Airport when my flight was delayed due to bad weather conditions. After I checked in, my first stop was the departure gate. Most people looked nervous, as if this flight would be their last. There were also some noisy teenagers and tired mothers screaming at their children.

Unit 1, Chapter 1, Exercise A,, Page 12 It was far too noisy there, so I let the smell of fresh coffee guide me to a café near the duty-free store. I watched people pushing carts piled high with suitcases, holding plastic bags with their duty-free purchases. I soon got bored, so I went upstairs to the flight gallery. The planes looked like giant birds tasking off and coming in to land. I decided that this was the most peaceful spot in the airport and I waited patiently for my flight to be announced.
