The Achievement Program

The U.S. Department of Education data shows that students who report consistently high levels of involvement in instrumental music study during the middle- and high-school years show “significantly higher levels of mathematics proficiency by grade 12” James Catterall, Richard Chapleau, and John Iwanaga, “Involvement in the Arts and Human Development,” 1999

Music is one of our greatest tools for learning and development. All students in the United States deserve the opportunity to celebrate their musical achievements nationally.

A national structure and standard for independent music study across the U.S. An aspirational ladder of music study that motivates students and helps them set and achieve goals A highly flexible structure to provide choice of music and customized pace of teaching/learning Spans all aspects of music study, including performance, technique, sight reading and singing, Academic, and history Complements existing state, regional, and school programs

Ongoing Standards of Excellence The adjudicating body includes over 350 distinguished teachers and performers from across North America. All adjudicators must successfully complete a training program that includes an intensive series of lectures, demonstrations, and a practicum. Adjudicators attend required professional development programs and are reviewed annually to ensure integrity of the national standard.

Certificates: Awards and Recognition Certificates of Achievement Certificates are awarded for both the Performance and Academic assessments. Certificates of Excellence These certificates are awarded to students in each assessment center and in each state who earn the highest marks for their Performance assessment level. What are Performance assessments? Assessments are designed to recognize and confirm individual development and achievement. Repertoire Technique Musicianship (Aural Skills, sight reading/singing)

Academic Assessments Correspond with Performance assessments Play an essential role in developing musicianship and performance skills Include: – Rudiments – Harmony – Analysis – History – Pedagogy

What to Expect: One-on-one session with an adjudicator Friendly, interactive, professional atmosphere Objective assessment of repertoire, studies/etudes, technique, ear training, and sight reading Students receive official transcripts which are archived and tracked.
