BACK TO SCHOOL WELCOME TO MRS. AGUIRRE’S KINDERGARTEN CLASS

CURRICULUM Language Arts *Journey’s Reading Series, this covers phonics, phonemic awareness, rhyming, grammar to name a few items *Guided Reading books *Sight Words

MATH Math in Focus Concrete-manipulatives Pictorial-picture of the number Abstract-numbers Visualization-ability to have a picture of the math problem in their head, “What do you see”? Math is Thinking-Proof and Evidence, “Can you prove it”? “How do you know”? Allow for some struggle time Gradual Release-lesson unfolds, mastery is the goal, working towards independence

WRITING Thinking Maps and Writing Connections We will be writing every day. At the beginning it is practicing forming letters and copying class environment. Writing is developmental, students start slowly and build upon each lesson taught. Please make sure your child can write their first name forming the letters correctly. Tall letters start at the top line (sky), short letters start at the middle line (fence), and letters that hang go below the bottom line (ground)

SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE Social Studies: Getting Along/Rules American Symbols Community Workers Times Past Science: Life Science-Animals, plants Physical Science-Matter, Magnets Earth Science-Weather, Seasons

LIBRARY Our scheduled library time is on Thursday at 10:30. Students will check out 1 book for the week. Please make sure to read it to your child on Thursday and Friday. On Monday night they will read it to you by reading the pictures. On Tuesday night they will read it to you by retelling the story. Return library book on Wednesday. We have been practicing 3 ways to read in the classroom, along with building “stamina”. ** Please return book on Wednesday. 3 Ways to Read 1. Read the Picture 2. Retell the Story 3. Read the words (if you can)

HOMEWORK Homework will consist of some of these items: math pages, language arts pages, nightly reading, writing, working on sight words, practicing letter formation, letter sounds and later in the year guided reading books

GRADING Progress Reports will be sent home in October ( only for students who are at risk for not meeting grade expectations ) and March 2016 (only for students who are at risk for not meeting grade expectations ) Parent Conferences will be in November. You will receive more information at a later date. Report Cards go home in December 2015 (1 st semester) and June 2016 (2 nd semester)

ASSESSMENTS District Common Assessments in math and Language Arts (4 assessments) Early Literacy test (STAR Reading) Kindergarten Assessments (ESGI) Results will be sent home

MATH STATIONS/LITERACY CENTERS Our Math and Literacy centers consist of hands-on activities, pencil/paper work, small groups with teacher Centers help students become independent and they learn how to problem solve and work cooperatively with their peers.

COMMUNICATION I will be sending out a Weekly Newsletter to inform you on the happenings in our Kindergarten class. Please check your child’s backpack every night for important paperwork. VOLUNTEERS/ROOM PARENT Parent volunteers are always welcome to come and help in the classroom. If you plan on being here on a weekly basis, please note that you must have an updated TB test. Parent volunteers need to be Board approved before starting in the classroom. I am currently making a schedule for parent volunteers, I will send out the schedule next week. I would like parent volunteers to start working in the classroom in September. I am also in need of a Room Parent(s), if you are Interested please let me know

STUDENT SUPPLIES/CLASSROOM DONATIONS Students will need a small pencil box to keep their school supplies organized. We are always in need of Kleenex and stickers,

MISCELLANEOUS Bring a healthy snack, Grizzly of the Week, Birthdays, allergic to nuts, help your child learn their lunch number, 10 Grizzly Good Citizen slips earns a trip to the treasure box, Box Tops, Homework folder, P.E. on Fridays, I am still in the process of assessing students, PICTURE DAY TOMORROW.
