2 Overview The world ocean is the most prominent feature on Earth. Oceans cover 70.8% of Earth’s surface. The origin and development of life on Earth is connected to the ocean. The oceans have a long history on Earth.

3 Oceans cover ~75% of Earth –One World Ocean Moderates Temperature –High Specific Heat Capacity (amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a substance by a certain amount). –Greatly Influences Weather World of Water

5 Half of the human population lives within 150 miles of ocean Practically all life depends upon it –Life originated in it More water trapped in earth’s interior than in it’s ocean and atmosphere combined –Although deep compared to land topography it still just occurs in a relatively thin layer

6 Ocean Basics ~4,000 m deep (~2.5 miles) –Max of 11,000 m in Marianas Trench Average temp of 3.9°C (39°F) Average salinity (saltiness) of 3.4% –Often given in parts per thousand (34 ppt) 97% of earth’s surface water

7 Earth’s Oceans Earth has one ocean. It is divided into four principle oceans, and one other. –Pacific Ocean –Atlantic Ocean –Indian Ocean –Arctic Ocean –Southern, or Antarctic Ocean

13 Comparing Oceans to Continents Average ocean depth is 3729 meters (12,234 feet) Average continental elevation is 840 meters (2756 feet) Deepest ocean trench is the Mariana Trench at 11,022 meters (36,161 feet) Highest continental mountain is Mt. Everest at 8850 meters (29,935 feet)

14 Trade & Exploration Voyaging on water was important to many early civilizations. The Egyptians, Cretans, and Phoenicians were all skilled sailors. Economically driven Cartographers, or chart makers, recorded information about locations and landmarks and currents. –Charts = water –Maps = land

15 Early Exploration of the Oceans Early “explorers” used boats to seek new fishing grounds for food. The ocean facilitated trade and interaction between cultures.

16 Pacific Navigators The peopling of the Pacific Islands required extensive travel in open boats and exceptional navigation skills. It was difficult because islands are widely scattered.

17 European Navigators Phoenecians – first from Western Hemisphere to develop navigation charts –Navigated circa 2000 B.C. –Explored Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean –First circumnavigation of Africa –Reached the British Isles

18 European Navigators Greek Pytheas –Sailed northward using a simple method to determine latitude in 325 B.C. –Navigated using the North Star Eratosthenes determined Earth’s circumference fairly accurately.

21 Europeans Herodotus produced inaccurate world map around 450 B.C. Claudius Ptolomy produced fairly accurate world map around 150 A.D. –Erroneously updated Eratosthenes’ original circumference estimation, later causing Christopher Columbus to believe he had reached Asia

22 Vikings Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish marauders –Fast, seaworthy ships –Wreaked havoc on Ireland, England, France –Colonized Iceland and Greenland –Formed settlements in Newfoundland 500 years before Columbus “discovered” America

24 The Age of Discovery in Europe 1492–1522 Search for new Eastern trade routes by sea –Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal sought trade routes around Africa. –Europeans explore North and South America Christopher Columbus was financed by the Spanish to find new trade routes to Asia. Englishman John Cabot arrived in northeast North America in 1497.

25 The Age of Discovery in Europe 1492– 1522 Spaniard Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigated the globe. –Was killed on a Pacific Island in 1521 Juan Sebastian del Caño completed the circumnavigation in Voyages paved the way for the Spanish to take gold from the Incas and Mayas. Spain’s maritime dominance ended when England defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588.

27 Voyaging for Science The English wanted to retain maritime superiority. Captain James Cook (1728 – 1779) undertook three scientific voyages. –Ships HMS Endeavour, Resolution, Adventure –Mapped many islands in Pacific –Systematically measured ocean characteristics –Marine chronograph (longitude)

28 Voyaging for Science James Cook, a commander in the British Royal Navy, is credited with leading voyages that greatly contributed to scientific oceanography. Some of his and his scientists’ accomplishments include:  Verification of calculations of planetary orbits  Charting of New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef, Tonga and Easter Islands  Initiation of friendly relations with many native populations  Sampling marine life, land plants and animals  Recording data concerning the ocean floor and geological formations

29 Captain Cook James Cook was a great leader who led 3 immense voyages, circling the globe several times Charts that he made of New Zealand were still in wide use up until 1974! Contributions to navigation, cartography, health, biology His extensive diaries are a ‘good read’

30 Breakthrough in Navigation In 1728 John Harrison invented the chronometer –Essentially a clock powered by a spring, not a pendulum, so it would work on a pitching and rolling vessel –allowed for accurate measurements of longitude –“Dead Reckoning” now possible Distance = Rate x Time –See Appendix III in Textbook for more

32 The First Scientific Expeditions Were Undertaken by Governments The United States Exploring Expedition launched in 1838 was a naval and scientific expedition. The HMS Beagle, on which Charles Darwin served as a naturalist, voyaged to South America and some Pacific Islands. HMS Challenger expedition of was the first oceanic expedition dedicated to scientific research.

33 HMS Challenger Expedition First devoted scientific expedition Inspired by Darwin’s Beagle expedition Coined the term “Oceanography” Systematic samples taken throughout 4 year trip Sir John Murray’s published a 50 volume report known as the “Challenger Report”

34 Oceanography Continues More high-technology tools available today –Sonar –Robotics –Computers –Satellites

35 SONAR (sound navigation and ranging) (right) Echo sounders sense the contour of the seafloor by beaming sound waves to the bottom and measuring the time required for the sound waves to bounce back to the ship. If the round-trip travel time and wave velocity are known, distance to the bottom can be calculated. This technique was first used on a large scale by the German research vessel Meteor in the 1920s.

41 Nature of Scientific Inquiry Natural phenomena governed by physical processes Physical processes similar today as in the past Scientists discover these processes and make predictions Called the scientific method

42 Theories and Truth Science never reaches absolute truth. Truth is probable and based on available observations. New observations yield scientific progress.

43 Scientific Method What is science? –It’s a process –Best synonym would probably be “knowledge” –I always think of it as “the process by which we know things”

44 Scientific Method Science starts with a question and follows with a tentative explanation That tentative explanation is a hypothesis The hypothesis is tested by an experiment

45 Scientific Method Some hypothesis consistently supported by experimentation can become a theory. –For example, gravity is supported experimentally and explained theoretically. “I have a theory.” –Common use versus scientific use Sometimes theories can have laws associated with them, which are summaries of observations that never vary (e.g. gravity)

46 Scientific Method Science only works on what is observable and testable. Science is about “how” questions, not “why” questions. The “why” questions are best answered by philosophy, religion, art, etc.

47 Earth Was Formed of Material Made in Stars What do we know about the origin of the Universe? The universe began with the Big Bang, probably about 14 billion years ago. As the universe expanded, it cooled, eventually allowing the formation of atoms, which then formed galaxies and stars.

48 Big Bang All matter and energy was one contiguous mass before the big bang –Supported by subatomic particle physics –Science offers no answers for prior origins What do stars have to do with the ocean? –Most of the substance of Earth, its ocean, and all living things, was formed by stars. Every chemical element heavier than hydrogen was manufactured and released into space by stars.

49 Formation of Earth and the Solar System Nebular hypothesis – all bodies in the solar system formed from nebula –Nebula = cloud of gases and space dust Mainly hydrogen and helium

50 Nebular Hypothesis Gravity concentrates material at center of cloud (Sun) Protoplanets form from smaller concentrations of matter

51 Protoearth Larger than Earth today Homogeneous composition Bombarded by meteorites –Moon formed from collision with large asteroid

52 Density Stratification High density = heavy for its size Early Earth experienced gravitational separation. –High density materials (Iron and Nickel) settled in core. –Less dense materials formed concentric spheres around core.

53 Earth, Ocean, and Atmosphere Accumulated in Layers Sorted by Density How did Earth become density stratified? Young Earth was probably homogeneous Heat and gravitational pressure caused Earth to partially melt Gravity then pulled the iron present into the center of Earth

62 Origin of Earth’s Oceans Outgassed water vapor fell as rain. The first permanent oceans formed 4 billion years ago. Salinity developed from dissolved rock elements. –Early acidic rain dissolved more crustal minerals than today.

63 Life’s Possible Ocean Origins Earth’s earliest known life forms are 3.5-billion-year-old bacteria fossilized in ocean rocks. These are the building blocks for life on early Earth. There is no direct evidence of early Earth’s environment.

64 Life Probably Originated in the Ocean Fossil of a bacteria- like organism (with an artist’s reconstruction) that photosynthesized and released oxygen into the atmosphere. Among the oldest fossils ever discovered, this microscopic filament from northwestern Australia is about 3.5 billion years old.

65 BTW, in the most recent issue of the Journal Nature (September 2016), there is a paper describing a fossil found in Greenland that is even older (3.7 Billion years old.

66 Evolution and Natural Selection Organisms adapt and change through time. Advantageous traits are naturally selected. Traits are passed to the next generation. Organisms adapt to environments. Organisms can modify environments.
