2 ATEX classification air motors, Dagmar Dübbelde Why ATEX Certification? On the 1. July 2003 the EU guideline 94/9/EG was introduced (= ATEX 100 conformity) All equipment and components that may be installed in a potentially explosive atmospheres, must be properly ignition source rated and clearly marked accordingly. The regulations also apply to mechanical (non-electrical) equipment Risk assessment to determine if hazardous areas exist : How can an explosion occur? If: dangerous substances are involved, which may incur an explosion: - combustible gases - vapours, mists - dusts different sources of ignition are present: - high surface temperatures - sparks, flames, electric arcs, acoustic energy, optical radiation, electromagnetic waves, etc. - static electricity - stray electric and leakage currents ATEX Certification according EC guidelines

4 ATEX classification air motors, Dagmar Dübbelde Communauté Européenne = European Community This symbol documents the declaration of the manufacturer that the required EC guidelines – as stated in the EC Declaration of Conformity - are observed and its provisions are followed. The DEPRAG air motor is suited for standard use in explosion hazardous environments. IIDesign Group: This motor is NOT designed for use in underground mining 2Equipment Category: This equipment is designed for the use in areas where the explosive atmospheres may exist, which consist of gases, steam, combustible fumes or a combination of dust and air. (Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21 and Zone 22) GDThis motor is suited for the use in explosion hazardous areas, which are caused by combustible gases, steams, fumes or dust. cIgnition Protection: structural protection IICExplosion Group: This motor is suited for the requirements per Explosion Group IIC. It also fulfils the requirements of the Explosion Groups IIB and IIA. T4 (130°C)Temperature class: T4 = 135°C surface temperature A motor with a temperature class of T4 may not exceed a maximum surface temperature of 135°C. Motor should be tested to ensure that the permissible temperature does not exceed = 130°C; there is a safety margin of = 5°C. This is the maximum permissible surface temperature of the motor, if used in an explosive atmosphere containing dust. 5 ATEX classification air motors, Dagmar Dübbelde The hazardous area zone classification and corresponding equipment categories are: Zone 0 or zone 20 - category 1 equipment Zone 1 or zone 21 - category 2 equipment Zone 2 or zone 22 - category 3 equipment Notes: Category 2 equipment can also be used in zones 2 or zone 22. Category 1 equipment can also be used in zone1, zone 21, zone 2 or zone 22. II 2 GD c IIC T4 (130°C) X Category 2 Equipment For gases, vapours and mists the zone classifications are: Zone 0A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is present continuously or for long periods or frequently. Zone 1A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally. Zone 2A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only. For dusts the zone classifications are: Zone 20A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present continuously, or for long periods or frequently. Zone 21A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally. Zone 22A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
