Update on Garbage, Recycling, Green Waste, and Street Sweeping Changes Public Works Department May 18, 2004

What prompted the changes?  AB 939 – requires cities to divert 50% of garbage from landfills.  $10,000 per day penalty for non- compliance.  How is Stockton doing? 2000: 47% 2001: 41% 2002: 38% So far, “good faith” efforts have avoided fines.

What prompted the changes? (continued)  The Regional Water Quality Control Board required City to prohibit green waste from going down our storm drains. Fish were dying in the Delta because of organic contaminates from our Storm Drainage System.

City Code Changes (effective June 1, 2004)  All residents and businesses must separate recyclables from garbage.  Green waste must go into containers not the street.  All collectors and C & D contractors must recycle 50% of waste.
