ESSENTIAL QUESTION HOW CAN YOU TELL IF SOMEONE IS DEPRESSED?

DEFINITIONS A MENTAL ILLNESS IS A DISORDER THAT AFFECTS A PERSON’S THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS, AND BEHAVIORS. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT CAUSES THE CHANGES IN BRAIN CHEMISTRY THAT LEAD TO MENTAL ILLNESS. WITH THERAPY, MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE MENTAL ILLNESS CAN LIVE REGULAR LIVES.

DEFINITIONS THE FOLLOWING BEHAVIORS CAN BE SIGNS OF DEPRESSION: 1. BEING UNABLE TO ENJOY DAILY ACTIVITIES 2. SLEEPING EITHER MORE OR LESS THAN NORMAL 3. OVEREATING OR NOT HAVING AN APPETITE 4. FEELING TIRED OR LACKING ENERGY

DEFINITIONS 5. MOVING SLOWLY OR BEING UNABLE TO SIT STILL 6. HAVING DIFFICULTY MAKING DECISIONS 7. USING ALCOHOL OR OTHER DRUGS 8. FEELING GUILTY, IRRITABLE, OR HOPELESS WITHOUT CAUSE 9. THINKING ABOUT DEATH OR HURTING ONESELF BIPOLAR MOOD DISORDER IS A MOOD DISORDER IN WHICH A PERSON HAS DEPRESSION SOMETIMES AND MANIA OTHER TIMES. THIS DISORDER IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS MANIC DEPRESSION.

DEFINITIONS ANXIETY DISORDERS ARE MENTAL ILLNESSES THAT CAUSE EXTREME NERVOUSNESS, WORRY, OR PANIC. THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF ANXIETY DISORDERS INCLUDING: 1. PANIC DISORDER 2. PHOBIAS 3. OBSESSIONS 4. OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER
