Emily Dickinson By:Brian C. 8 th Period

Emily Dickinson Emily Dickinson was born on December 10,1830 in the city of Amherst, Massachusetts Born to Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson

Family Emily has 1 older brother named Austin Dickinson and a younger sister named Lavinia Dickinson. Emily and her brother and sister were nurtured in a quiet reserved family

Education Emily attended Amherst Academy from 1844 through 1847 and also attended Mount Holyoke female seminary from 1847 through 1848.

Where They Lived Emily and family lived in a mid size house in Amherst, Massachusetts, since Emily’s dad was a Orthodox Calvinists was always able to have enough to support the whole family

What They Wrote About Emily Dickinson wrote about the knowledge of writings that were written by John Keats, Josh Ruskin, and Sir Thomas Brown. Emily also wrote about some feelings that bother every human being around the world.

Why They Wrote Poems Emily wrote poems cause she was lonely at one point of her life Her poems are also marked by the intimate recollection of inspirational moments

Interesting Facts Emily withdrew herself from any social contact at the age of 23 and devoted herself to writing as a secret. Emily started writing poems like around 1850.

Interesting Facts #2 After the civil war and restricted her contacts, Emily dressed only in white and saw only a few visitors who came to visit her. Emily’s love life remains mysterious even though some think she had a disappointed love affair.

Interesting Facts #3 Emily Dickinson died in Lavinia Dickinson co- edited 3 volumes of her sisters work after she passed away Now she is known as one of the most innovative poets of the 19 th century

Interesting Facts #4 Emily died May 15, 1886 due to Bright’s Disease. Emily just decided to seclude herself in her home and write about the most intimate experiences.

Poem By Emily Dickinson “Life” Glee! The great storm is over! Four have recovered the land; Forty gone down together Into the boiling sand. Ring, for the scant salvation! Toll, for the bonnie souls, Neighbor and friend and bridegroom, Spinning upon the shoals!

Poem Continue How they will tell the shipwreck When winter shakes the door, Till the children ask, "But the forty? Did they come back no more?" Then a silence suffuses the story, And a softness the teller's eye; And the children no further question, And only the waves reply.

Analyze I think the poem is telling us a story about an event that happened in Emily’s life. She was probably caught in a storm that killed 40 people including some of Emily’s friends or people she knew!

Analyze #2 I also think its about how life just takes things away from and you and later on gives you something even more valuable. I also think its about how some questions can only be answered through time.
