Learning through Drama… Rehearsing for Life

What is Education?! The process of imparting or acquiring general and particular knowledge towards a chosen profession The result produced by instruction, training, or study: to show one’s education

Jacques Maritain: “The aim of education is to guide young persons in the process through which they shape themselves as human persons – armed with knowledge, strength of judgment, and moral virtues – while at the same time conveying to them the spiritual heritage of the nation and the civilization in which they are involved.”

What are the benefits of Arts in Education?

The Value of Drama in Education Of all the arts, theatre, is the one most concerned with the study of humanity. The process of preparing for a performance requires students to experience and value the perspective of another human being As students learn to act, to be involved in many aspects of theatre, and to learn to entertain audiences with the art and craft of theatre, students are gaining understanding of themselves and others Theatre education is a tool for the study of history, culture, diversity, and the human experience as a whole

The Value of Drama in Education Students become interested and involved in their studies. They then learn to enjoy the learning process. Drama or theatre studies promotes active, not passive, learning! Students learn creative expression and problem solving Students learn dedication and commitment Students develop a self-confident, can-do attitude Students learn self – discipline Students learn leadership skills Theatre study emphasizes three distinct areas: classes, laboratories, and co-curricular productions Students acquire an appreciation of the beautiful Theatre studies teach the importance of the individual

The Value of Drama in Education Among the personal qualities and skills that theatre studies can enhance are: Verbal communication skills Self-confidence The ability to bounce back from frustration and disappointment A persistent can-do, try again attitude The ability to work with others in a group Self-discipline and concentration Flexibility in meeting new situations and challenges The ability to cope with pressure Promptness, a grasp of how to budget one’s time & an understanding of deadlines Dependability A willingness to accept responsibility for major projects The ability to accept and act on criticism

The Dramatic Difference Educators know that developing students’ creative thinking is an important part of a complete education, but schools often lack the funds or class time to focus on this.

The Dramatic Difference A recent study by Stanford University and the Carnegie Foundation show that involvement in creative arts helps children improve and promote academic achievement.

The Dramatic Difference Children who are involved in the arts are: 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement 3 times more likely to be elected to leadership positions in their schools 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair

Jacques Maritain: “The aim of education is to guide young persons in the process through which they shape themselves as human persons – armed with knowledge, strength of judgment, and moral virtues – while at the same time conveying to them the spiritual heritage of the nation and the civilization in which they are involved.”

The Heart of an Educator Situation Mastery & Self- Actualization Self-Mastery & Trust of Self Self-Knowledge & Self-Discipline Self-Discovery SELF Do we care for our students? How do we show them we care? Do we dream with them?

The Heart of an Educator Situation Mastery & Self- Actualization Self-Mastery & Trust of Self Self-Knowledge & Self-Discipline Self-Discovery SELF How are we helping them develop into mature adults? Are we empowering them to face the realities of life? Do we help them see the important things in life? What are we doing to encourage them to be the protagonists of their life? Our students are only with us for a while. Let’s make the time count. YOU can make an amazing difference! Information ~ Formation ~ Transformation

Get in on the Act! “Some of us make theatre: that’s our profession. All of us ‘are’ theatre: that’s the essence of our human condition. As human beings we are ‘actors’ (we act our lives) and ‘spectators’ (we observe ourselves in action) – We are ‘playwrights’ of our own words and ‘directors’ of our deeds. To be human is to be able to invent the future and not merely to wait for it. To teach and to learn theatre, is to learn and to teach humanity.” Dr. Augusto Boal Founder and Artistic Director of the Centers for the Theatre of the Oppressed in Rio de Janeiro and Paris

Michelangelo’s David Mr. Pagsanghan: See and draw out the David in each of your student!

Thank you!
