SUNTRUST PARK SAFETY WINNING IS IMPORTANT TO THE BRAVES, BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR THE BRAVES AT THEIR NEW SUNTRUST PARK IS PATRON SAFETY. PBL HS

STANDARDS S8P1. Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter. d. Distinguish between physical and chemical properties of matter as physical (i.e., density, melting point, boiling point) or chemical (i.e., reactivity, combustibility). e. Distinguish between changes in matter as physical (i.e., physical change) or chemical (development of a gas, formation of precipitate, and change in color). 2SCI.9-12.PS.SPS6 Students will investigate the properties of solutions: (conductivity)

 A huge problem for Suntrust Park is keeping all of the fans safe while in the park.  To ensure the safety of visitors to the Braves SunTrust Park, one task for security personnel is to to identify unknown substances to determine what they are.  You are in a training program to become one of the security personnel at the new stadium, and you will be learning how to identify unknown substances.  In order to become certified, and get a job at the new park, you must identify unknown substances and document how you made the identification based on their physical and chemical properties. Problem

The substances you will identify for your certification will come from the following items. The metal is one of the following: 1.Copper 2.Aluminum 3.Brass The clear liquid is one of the following: 1.Water 2.Isopropyl alcohol 3.Salt water 4.Hydrogen Peroxide The white powder is one of the following: 1.Baking soda 2.Baking powder 3.Baby powder 4.Cornstarch

Brainstorm  What do already know about this topic?  What do you need to know to solve this problem?

What we need to know.  What is matter?  What is a property?  What is a physical property? What is a chemical property?  How are they alike & different?  What is a substance?  How do we find physical properties?  How do we find chemical properties?

Warm up 8/9  What is matter?  What is a physical property?  What is a chemical property?

DRAW  Complete the anticipation guide quietly before beginning to read.  After reading write a constructed response on the key point of the article.Make 3 connections.  Text- Self (Connect this to yourself somehow)  Text-Text (Connect to another text you have read)  Text-to world (Connect to something in the world)

Closing  Pair up with someone at your table.  Share your constructed response with them.  Be sure to read as I will ask you to share something they wrote.

Training Session Agenda  Lesson 1 – Physical properties  Lesson 2 – Chemical properties  Certification Test

How is the solution presented? Complete the “Unknown Substance Analysis Report” which includes:  The physical properties used to identify each  The chemical properties used to identify each  The identity of each substance based on the data collected from your observations and experiments  How you used the physical properties to differentiate between the possible substances  How you used the chemical properties to differentiate between the possible substances  Pictures that support your findings

Warm up 8/11  Which of these is a physical property? a. ability to dissolve in water b. combustibility c. reactivity d. ability to rust  If we have a piece of metal with a mass of 20g and it has a volume of 10cm³ what is it’s density?

What were the powders?  A-Baking powder  B- Corn Starch  C-Baking Soda  D- Baby Powder

Density demo  Write on an even numbered page in your notebook.  Write a CLAIM what you think will happen when I pour the four different liquids into a beaker.  Write about the Evidence you see.  And write REASONING of what you saw happen.

Physical and Chemical Practice  Everyone grab a tablet and go to my blog. Click on the practice worksheet.

Warm up 8/12  Material Managers grab a tablet for everyone at your group.

Quiz  Go to socrative.com  The room code is C8TAM6RU

Word wall  Each group will get one vocabulary word.  Each group must create a drawing of the word, create a sentence using the word, create a non example, write out the definition in simple terms. 1. Matter2. Volume3. Mass 4. Weight5.Density6. Physical Property 7. Chemical Property For other tables it is your job to create drawings for all of the following physical and chemical properties. FlammabilityCombustibilityAbility to rust ColorTasteSmell SolubilityReaction Melting PointHardness Luster

Closing  Students you will write three questions on an index card or sheet of paper and have your parent(s)/guardian record the answers on the back of the card and sign it. If the parent cannot answer the questions, then it is the student’s responsibility to teach them.

Warm up 8/15  Describe what is a physical property?  Describe what is a chemical property?

Mystery powder  Repeat steps 7-8 in your lab handout while only using the powder that was provided.  The goal is to be able to identify the powder. Be sure to record all observations and what the mystery powder is.

Density  c c  How do we find density using the displacement method?  Take notes where you were writing your lab observations or on the next available page.

Ticket out the door  Write down two things you learned on one sheet of paper

Warm up 8/16 "If you can't fly then run. If you can't run then walk. If you can't walk then crawl. But whatever you do you have to keep moving forward." - Martin Luther King Jr.  Using the displacement method of finding volume Tina had an irregular object that had a mass of 20g. She filled a graduated cylinder with water and it read 30mL. After dropping the object in the cylinder the water level went up to 40mL. What is the density of the object?  Explain what is volume?

What is Matter?  M M

DRAW  Grab a tablet and go to the blog.

Ticket out the door  Write down how to find the volume of a regular shaped object such as a cube.  Write down how to find the volume of irregular shaped object.

Warm up 8/17  Using the displacement method of finding volume Kevin Durant had an irregular object that had a mass of 100g. She filled a graduated cylinder with water and it read 50mL. After dropping the object in the cylinder the water level went up to 100mL. What is the density of the object?

Lab procedure today  Even number tables will start with the metals and odd number tables will start with the liquids.  Material managers come up here and get the necessary items and any kind of not following instructions will result in dismissal from the lab.  Test to see if the metals are magnetic and as well pipet exactly 30 mL or water into the graduated cylinder.  Come up to the front and calculate the mass of all 3 of your metals.

Metal Lab  Your group will receive 3 metals.  1. Identify all the physical properties differences and similarities.  2. Test to see if the metals are magnetic. State weather that is a physical property or a chemical property.

Metal Lab  3. Managers get a graduated cylinder and put 30 mL of water in the cylinder. Drop a metal in the cylinder and measure the displacement to find out the volume of the metal.  4. Collectors in seat C bring each metal up and measure the mass of each and record. Be sure to bring your science notebook up with you. Go back to your groups and figure out the density. 

Warm up 8/18  Identify the mystery Liquid  Identify the mystery metal

Metals and liquids used  Metals- 1. Aluminum 2. Copper 3. Brass  Liquids- 1. Water 2. Alcohol 3. Peroxide 4. Salt Water

What were the powders?  A-Baking powder  B- Corn Starch  C-Baking Soda  D- Baby Powder

Mystery Liquid  Physical Properties  Clear  Liquid at room temperature  Strong odor  Chemical Properties:  Flammable

What is the Mystery Metal?  Toxicity: Poisonous in large amounts  Reactivity with water: It does not react with water  Oxidation: Readily combines with water and carbon dioxide  Corrosion: Corrodes when exposed to air  Has a density of: 8.96g/mL  Right down your answer in your science notebook
