The history of the discovery of America The United States is a rather young country. Nevertheless, many dramatic events happened during than short period of its history. First people appeared on the American continent years ago, as scientists believe. There was a land bridge connecting Asia and North America. Later, water covered natural bridge and the Bering Strait was formed. Nobody knew about the existence of the American continent for thousands of years. In the early times people in Europe and Middle East were afraid of the open sea and that’s why it took them a long time to discover the west. They believed that the western seas were dangerous for people because terrible monsters lived there that could crush ships. Time passed and some people found courage to make seatrips. Those first people were the Vikings. Erik the Red sailed to the West looking for new lands. He found a land that was covered with ice even in summer. He called that land Greenland. The son of Erik the Red reached the land which is now Canada around the year His name was Leif Ericsson. He and his men spent a winter there, but they had to leave because of native tribes.

Task : Are these sentences true or false? 1. Asia and North America were connected by a big stone bridge. 2. First people appeared there years ago. 3. Europeans were afraid of open seas because of strong streams. 4. Russians made first trip to American continent. 5. Vikings discovered Greenland. 6. Leif Ericsson arrived Canada the year 1000.

America was founded by Columbus in Columbus fled to this country because of persecution by Ferdinand and Isabella, who refused to believe the world was round. Before Columbus reached America he cried «Ceylon! Ceylon!» because he wanted to see India. When he arrived, he cried again. This time he cried «I have found it!» Columbus was mistaken in thinking he had reached India. There is still a great deal of confusion about the East and the West. As Columbus discovered, if you go west long enough you find yourself in the east and vice versa. In the New World most of the eastern half of the country is called the Middle West although it is known as the East by those who live in the Far West. Columbus, who was as confused as anybody who has been at sea for a long time, called the first people he saw «Indians». Accompanied by his followers, Columbus made several other voyages in search of India. Try as he might, however, he kept discovering America and finally returned to Spain to die.

QUESTIONS: Who discovered America? Did Columbus intend to reach America or India? Is there any confusion about the East and the West? How did Columbus call first people in America? Did he make other voyages in search of India? VOCABULARY: persecution — преследование returned- вернулся to reach — достигать аccompanied – в сопровождении confusion — путаница followers – последотватель voyage — путешествие several - несколько discovered – обнаружил die - умирать although - хотя
