April 11, 2016 Reminders Wednesday is the test, look over yellow and green packets. We will begin the Human Sexuality unit this week, so if your form is not turned in, you will be placed in another classroom to do a different unit Getting Started Please your green packet and turn to the Body image notes Fill out the Starter Please turn in your PINK consent form if you haven’t done so already Make a list of 5 things you like about your body. Make a list of 5 things you dislike about your body. What is an Eating Disorder? An eating disorder is a disease that involves an unhealthy concern with ones body shape and weight,. It is a disease that causes a harmful change in the state of health of the body and mind.

Factors of Eating Disorders Low self esteem Loneliness Depression Feeling inadequate/hopeless History of abuse History of being teased about weight Troubled relationships Pressure from friends and family to be thin Unhealthy body image Difficulty handling stress

Anorexia Nervosa Eating disorder that involves limiting the amount of food a person eats It results in starvation and an inability to stay at a healthy body weight.

Signs of Anorexia Nervosa Limiting the food they eat Cutting food into small pieces Exercising compulsively Using laxatives Wearing baggy clothing to hide actual body size Avoids eating in public

Effects of Anorexia Nervosa Dry mouth Heart decay Osteoporosis Muscle loss/weakness Kidney failure from dehydration Fainting/fatigue Dry skin/hair or Losing hair Depression Poor memory Low energy Extra layer of hair (warmth) No menstruation Malnutrition- the condition in which the body doesn’t get the nutrients it needs to grow and function properly. Shrunken organs Low body temperature Low blood pressure Slowed metabolism

Bulimia This is an illness in which a person binges on food and then tries to get rid of it by vomiting or using laxatives Called Binging and purging Binging means to eat huge amounts of food in a short amount of time

Signs of Bulimia Binge eating Frequent weighting Self induced vomiting Using the bathroom after eating

Effects of Bulimia Constipation Dehydration Dental cavities Tars of the esophagus and stomach Heart problems

Over Eating Over eating is an eating disorder in which a person eats more than is physically needed This will lead to excess body weight

Over Exercising This is burning far more calories through exercise than what is taken in over a long period of time Many time over exercising happens at the same time as an eating disorder

Over Exercising This means whatever little calories are taken in they are spent through exercise This will leave the body depleted from the nutrients it needs to stay healthy The results are similar to those of anorexia

Getting Help Friends, family, teachers, and coaches all need to be aware of the signs of eating disorders. If you think someone has an eating disorder make sure to let a trusted adult know. Professional counseling is one of the best treatment for an eating disorder.
