It’s a term describing two independent clauses which are joined together with no connecting word or punctuation to separate the clauses. In other words it’s a sentence that is improperly punctuated. {subject and its predicate and another subject and its predicate} What is a run on?

You can join the two independent clauses with coordinating conjunctions following a comma. I. __________, F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. __________ II. F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) Avoidance No. 1 Run ons

If you decide to not use a comma and coordinating conjunction then you can use a semicolon. I. _________; _________ II. _________; however, _________ Avoidance No.2 Run ons

I. Use semicolon II. Comma and coordinating conjunction III. Subordinating conjunction IV. Split into two separate sentences V. Em-dash Over All avoidance methods

Run ons are a structural flaw. Just because a sentence is longer than expected that does not mean it is a run on. A long sentence may be a “run-off-at-the-mouth”, but it could still be punctuated properly. Run on Mini Facts
