Teaching English In Thailand - What You Need and What You Need To Know English is the current lingua franca. It is the working language in business, education, entertainment and political spheres in countries across the globe. Hence, a lot of emphasis is laid on learning this language particularly in those states where it is not the first language. Thailand has witnessed a great boom in its tourism industry over the last few years. There is increased interaction with tourists from different parts of the world. Many-a-times communication fails as there is no mutual intelligibility between Thai-speaking natives and English- speaking outsiders. For this reason, several Thai people have started training in the English language. It is good news for native English speakers intending to work as freelance language trainers or full-time teachers. However, before you jump to the job hunt process, here's what you need to know about teaching in Thailand. Teaching in Thailand - The Qualifications If you want to teach at a school or an educational institution, you should be qualified. You should have a bachelor's degree in English and minimum 2 years teaching experience. There are regional teaching certification courses such as TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). These certificate courses train teachers in the theory and practice of teaching. The course duration is 140 hours including 4-6 hours of on-the-job training. TEFL and TESOL certification translates into a better pay. Native English speakers are generally preferred over others. CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is another certification program. Uncertified teachers can teach on a freelance basis. This includes one-on-one training or home tutoring. Trainers can travel to a student's home or conduct classes in their own home. Work Permit As a citizen of another country, you will require a work permit to teach in Thailand. You can apply for a non-immigrant B visa at the Royal

Thai embassy in your state or country. The cost of the visa depends on the validity period and number of entries (single or multiple). In some cases, the employer applies for a non-immigrant visa on your behalf. Therefore, you should consult them before you personally apply for a work permit. The Job Hunt One can post their resume to a job board or create a job profile at an online recruitment agency. It is a good way to search for a teaching job in Thailand without having to travel to the country. The second option is to look for a job while in Thailand. You can seek employment at primary and high schools. You can also submit your resume to language training institutes. There are many in Bangkok. They train employees of large companies and business houses. An educational institution is not the only place that offers employment opportunities to an English trainer. Five star hotels and resorts also hire language trainers to coach their staff in English. They ask for an undergraduate degree or a certificate course. However, they are lenient with regards to the required educational qualifications. Coming to the main point, how much can you make teaching in Thailand? The average salary is between 25,000 and 35,000 Thai Baht. The salary is commensurate with qualification and experience. Teachers at language institutes and international schools can expect to be paid more.
