Absolute Value Numbers and the Number Line Addition Subtraction Multiplication and Division Add/Subtract Matrices

Numbers and the Number Line Natural Numbers are the counting numbers starting with 1. Whole Numbers begin with 0 and contain all the Natural Numbers

Rational Numbers are numbers that can be written as a fraction. It includes terminating decimals and repeating decimals. Numbers and the Number Line Integers are the whole numbers and their opposites. Negatives Positives Examples Opposite numbers are numbers that are the same distance from 0 in opposite directions.

Numbers and the Number Line Irrational Numbers are numbers that can not be written as a fraction. They are decimals that are nonrepeating and nonterminating Examples  … Real Numbers is the set of all rational and irrational numbers. Real Numbers Rational NumbersIrrational Numbers Integers Whole Numbers  6

Absolute Value The distance a number is from zero on a number line. A distance is always a positive number. Symbol 18 is 18 units from 0 0 is 0 units from 0 -4 is 4 units from 0

Addition SAME SIGNS Give the answer the same sign and add the numbers together = =12

DIFFERENT SIGNS Addition 1.Give the answer the sign from the larger of the two numerical parts. 2.Subtract the absolute value of the numbers = = = nd step 21 – 92 nd step nd step = - 2 nd step

Subtraction Change the problem into an addition problem. To subtract an integer, add its opposite = = - Think – (-4 ) 7+4 = 11

Add/Subtract Matrices Add or subtract the numbers that are in corresponding places. = =

Multiplication and Division The answer is always POSITIVE. SAME SIGNS -7 (- 9) Multiply or Divide the numbers. = = 48 = 7 = 9

Multiplication and Division The answer is always NEGATIVE. DIFFERENT SIGNS Multiply or Divide the numbers (-6) 54 = -= - = -= - = -= - 8 = -= - 6
