Overview GoVisual is a collaborative visual weather reference for pilots by pilots and other aviation professionals. GoVisual assists in pre-flight and en-route VFR flight planning in areas where minimal or no weather details are easily available. GoVisual makes pictures of the weather available to pilots via their mobile phone. GoVisual is a subscriber based system taking inputs from ground personnel, en- route pilots, and automatic systems (e.g. webcams) to build a database of photographs of current and noteworthy weather situations for sharing purposes. GoVisual uses existing network infrastructure (e.g. 3G networks like NextG) and existing application technologies (e.g. Internet/web/messaging systems)

System Description Overview The GoVisual system is comprised of: Contributors and Users. Software systems for collating and distributing data (database). MMS capable mobile phones (interface). Existing telecommunications infrastructure (3G, Internet) The GoVisual system exhibits: A simple and unique concept. Strength derived from its community (Web 2). Low cost (uses existing and common technology). Flexibility and adaptability on its configurable uses. Database Network Contributors/Users 3GInternet Mobile Phones Webcams

System Description Contributors Registered devices/users Security and accountability Only contributions from registered devices/users are accepted. Web cams Mobile phones with inbuilt camera Basic: MMS capable Contributor captures image with his mobile phone and forwards it with textual description to the GoVisual Server phone number. Intermediate: Capable of Internet browsing Contributor captures image with his mobile phone and browses to the GoVisual web portal and follows the prompts to build textual description and submit the image. Strong: Capable of running Java applications Contributor launches the GoVisual Java application on his/her phone and follows the prompts. GoVisual Java application collects additional information automatically e.g. base station name, signal strength, etc and includes it in the transmission.

System Description Database Secured Write access Only contributions from registered devices/users are allowed. Read access Open to all willing to pay for cost of MMS message. Processing and optimisation Incoming contributions All incoming data is time stamped and the textual information is enhanced e.g. Lats and Longs are derived if only airport location or town name is supplied. The image is enhanced and cache images are derived for the variety of mobile phone small screens and low bandwidth transmission of mobile networks. Finally the image, cache images and textual information are stored in a database. A high level mud map of Australia is generated from the data in the database showing the density and currency of available images. This mud map can be requested by GoVisual users. Incoming requests Incoming requests for data are examined and possibly enhanced resulting in a database query for the best available image.

System Description Database (continued) Processing and optimisation Outgoing data All outgoing data is formatted for the requesting device by GoVisual and dispatched via MMS to the mobile phone of the requesting pilot via existing phone network. Logging Transactions are logged for system and performance monitoring.

System Description Users Mobile Phone Phone Camera Users do not require a phone camera to access the GoVisual Server. MMS (Multimedia Message Service) and SMS (Short Message Service) MMS exhibits similar network functionality to SMS (also similar to e- mail) allowing users to send and receive rich messaging experiences (sound/text/images) to each other via their mobile phones. MMS and SMS is easy to use. Popularity of MMS and SMS 2.5G, 3G and 4G support MMS and SMS. Australia has already established its 3G networks (e.g. brand names: NextG, 3) Requesting data A simple SMS message to the GoVisual Server phone number is all that is required to query the GoVisual database afterwhich a return MMS message (or more) will be received. Users with more sophisticated mobile phones can connect to the GoVisual web server direct or launch the GoVisual Java application and transact that way.

Target Market Royal Flying Doctor Service The RFDS is already well trained and well equipped. GoVisual can supplement this by allowing an outback station operator or a trained nurse to provide an immediate visual on the target aerodrome or landing area. RPT Operations GoVisual allows RPT operations to monitor developing weather situations more closely by participating in more frequent updates on weather that is of concern. General Aviation VFR Operations GoVisual allows the GA VFR community to knowledge share on routes with little or no weather coverage. Flight Planners GoVisual can assist in flight planning.
