Word Play in Holes

What is Word Play Word play is a literary technique in which the words that are used become the main subject of the work, primarily for the purpose of intended effect or amusement. This includes the use of puns or homophones.

Examples of Word Play in Holes The recreation hall is named the W-R-E-C-K room. The boys all have descriptive names: Zigzag, Magnet, Squid, Armpit, Caveman, Barf Bag, and Xray. The macho guard is named Mr. Sir (he’s doubly a man), while the boys call Mr. Pendanski (“pen-dance-key”) Mom.
