The pictures and video clips provided are from the movie Holes. While we are only reading the book in this classroom, the pictures and videos will help you put an imagine in your head of what the scene in the book may have looked like. Here is a link to the author’s website

Armpit is an inmate at Camp Green Lake. While his friends call him Armpit, his real name is Theodore. He is one of the closest friends to X-Ray. Armpit tackles Stanley to the group when he does not call him by his nickname. odore_Johnson)

While at Camp Green Lake, Barfbag took off his shoe and sock and purposely gets bit by a rattlesnake and is sent away from the camp. He is the reason that there is a spot at the camp for Stanley to serve his sentence there. Stanley also inherents Barbag’s bed when Stanley comes to camp. lan)

Stanley “Caveman” Yelnats is the protagonists or main character in this book. Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake after being accused of a crime that he did not commit. Caveman’s family claims that they have been under a curse causing them bad luck because of their “no good, rotten, great-great grandfather.” Stanley's Sentence /title/caveman-stanley-yelnats-holes-photo

When the boys come to Camp Green Lake, their job is to dig holes. Every day they dig one hole as tall and as wide as their shovel. Once they are done digging their hole, they are done for the day ,00.html

Elya Yelnats is Stanley’s no good, rotten, great-great grandfather. He is blamed for the bad luck that the Yelnats family faces. He forgets to fulfill a promise to an old gypsy named Madame Zeroni which causes a curse of bad luck for generations to come. elnats

At Camp Green Lake, the boys are to report to the Warden if they find anything while digging. This is incase they find the treasure, the Warden knows about it. Stanley finds Kissin’ Kate Barlow’s lipstick tube while digging.

Camp Green Lake is the setting for this book. It is a juvenile detention camp for boys. At Camp Green Lake, the boys are forced to dig one hole every day. Green Lake used to be a beautiful town until it eventually dried up into a dry desert. green-lake.24662/

The warden at Camp Green Lake requires all of the boys to dig one hole everyday. They think it is to build character but she is actually trying to find the treasure that dried up with the lake. The holes are what this book is centered around. 5wordmoviereviews.com/2012/02/03/5-word holes /

When convicted of a crime, the boys had a chose to go to jail or become inmates at Camp Green Lake. The inmates all wear orange jumpsuits and sleep on cots in tents. They are assigned a shovel that they use to dig holes everyday. All of the inmates make nicknames for eachother. literature.pbworks.com/w/page/ /Holes

After Stanley is accused of stealing shoes from a homeless shelter, the judge gives Stanley the chose to go to jail or to Camp Green Lake.

The Legend of Kissin' Kate Barlow Katherine Barlow was a school teacher in Green Lake one hundred and ten years ago before the lake dried up. After the death of her love Sam, she turns into an outlaw; going on a killing rampage and kissing every person that she kills. She is also the person that buries the treasure.

The yellow spotted lizards are deemed to be highly poisonous lizards that live in the desert where Camp Green Lake is. They have exactly eleven spots on their back. Stanley ends up in a hole with multiple lizards and they do not bite him because he had been eating onions. 1/the-trouble-with-being-an- introvert/

Mr. Sir is one of the counselors at Camp Green Lake. He is very mean to the inmates but is scared of the warden and will do anything that she says. He is constantly eating sunflower seeds. s_mr_sir_a_wom.html

All of the boys at Camp Green Lake are given a nickname when they get to camp from the other inmates. Some of their nicknames are Caveman, Zero, X-Ray, Zigzag, Squid, Magnet and Armpit. sd.org/lydiawelp/holes- characters-and-background

Onions are a main symbol in this story. They symbolized healing when Stanley and Zero are stuck in the desert because the onions are their only source of food. The onions also help the boys avoid getting bit from the yellow spotted lizards. scenes

Dr. Pendanski or “Ma” like the inmates call him is Stanley’s tent counselor. He comes off as a funny and nice guy but he torments Zero constantly and hardly concerned about the safety of the inmates. 44

Zero comes off as very quiet and “dumb” as the other inmates call him. In reality, he just can’t read and wants to learn. Stanley helps him by tutoring him at the end of the day. or-movie

Rain is a symbol in this book. Ever since Sam was killed, it hadn’t rained again at Green Lake which is the reason that the lake dried up. The curse is finally broken at the end of the story and it rains once again at Camp Green Lake. ground.com/memorable-movie-moments-3- rain/

Mr. Sir has eaten sunflower seeds every since he quit smoking. One of the inmates steals Mr. Sir’s sunflower seed bag out of his truck. Stanley is later blamed for it and is sent to the Warden. giessen.blogspot.com/2009/11/sunflo wer-seeds.html

When Stanley and Zero are deserted in the desert, they look far into the horizon and see “God’s Thumb” on top of a mountain. This gives them the courage to climb the mountain to get to the top of “God’s Thumb.” This is where the boys find the spring and onions still growing in the spring. Once Stanley carries Zero up the mountain, the curse is broken.

Both Stanley and Zero were underestimated when they both run away from camp. The counselors stated that they would be “buzzard food” in a few days. Little did they know that their determination and courage would prevail and the boys would return to camp unharmed. rch_Editorial.asp?imid= &rpid =153&LAID=2&SRCV=khleo

At the end of the story, Stanley and Zero find the buried treasure and find out that Stanley’s name is on it which makes it his. The curse is broken and the Yelnats family no longer has bad luck. pg

The Warden of Camp Green Lake is the main antagonist in this book. She is very mean and cruel to others. Her relatives were alive at the time of Kissin’ Kate Barlow and her family has been looking for the missing treasure ever since. She is the reason that the boys are digging the holes because she wants to find the treasure. n_Walker_Close_Up.png

X-Ray is one of the inmates at Camp Green Lake. He is considered the leader of the tent that Stanley belongs to /holes/g- 6me8sck9gme0knejs86oha0

Yelnats was Stanley’s last name and is Stanley spelled backwards. The main character, Stanley is actually Stanley Yelnats the fourth because every man in the family has the same name. home/character-profile-stanley-yelnats

Hector “Zero” Zeroni becomes Stanley’s best friend at Camp Green Lake. Zero is thought to be dumb because he does not talk a lot and can’t read. Zero is the best hole digger at the camp. Zero’s great-great grandmother was the gypsy that put a curse on Stanley’s family. -from-holes
