Welcome to our Foundation Stage and KS1 Maths Evening Wednesday 18 th November 2015 “They didn’t do it like that when I was at school!”

Aims for the evening By the end of the evening we would like to achieve the following aims: To share teaching strategies used in school that can support your child’s learning at home To show progression in skills across the Foundation Stage and KS1 following our Calculation Policies To explore the resources we use in school to enhance and deliver our maths curriculum

Practical and engaging lessons Independent and shared thinking Self-discovery through child initiated activities Problem solving Asking questions Real-life learning Lots of talking! ‘I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.’ How do our children learn in maths?

Counting and Place Value For children to add, subtract, multiply and divide with confidence, they will need to have a secure understanding of place value and the number system. In the Foundation Stage activities include: Singing number rhymes Counting objects Identifying numbers Ordering numbers on a number line In KS1 children will develop these skills to then: Read, write and sequence numbers to 100 Understand how to use a 100 square Say the value of digits in a number by partitioning – 24 is made of a 20 and a 4.

Addition and Subtraction When children have developed their understanding of counting and place value, they will begin to add and subtract using a wide variety of resources. In the Foundation Stage activities include: Placing objects in a row to count Combining two sets of objects by finding a total Taking away objects from a set and find out how many are left Beginning to use a number line to answer simple + and – number sentences / word problems In KS1 children will develop these skills to then: Use knowledge of place value to + and - ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ on a number line and a 100 square Partition and recombine numbers to find the answers to + and - number sentences Solve addition and subtraction word problems using resources and written methods

Multiplication In the Foundation Stage activities include: Grouping objects into equal sets Counting in 2’s and 10’s using different objects and songs Solving simple word problems by counting groups e.g. ‘We have 5 pairs of socks, how many socks altogether?’ In KS1 children will develop these skills to then: Put objects in a horizontal line to begin repeated addition as a way of solving multiplication problems, progressing to repeated addition on a number line Use arrays of objects / spots to solve multiplication problems using rows and columns Recite multiplication facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables Begin to use x and = to record number sentences

Division In the Foundation Stage activities include: Sharing objects equally in small groups Halving everyday objects In KS1 children will develop these skills to then: Divide larger numbers of objects by sharing equally and using jottings Use a number line to divide using repeated subtraction Begin to use  and = to record number sentences Know the division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables Solve division word problems by using a chosen strategy

Division We have 6 marbles and we share them equally between 2 children. How many do they have each? 12 3 = 4 Subtract in jumps of 3 We made 4 jumps
