National Academy of Engineering Greatest Challenges and Opportunities for Engineering in the 21 st Century NAE GRAND CHALLENGES Make solar energy economical Provide energy from fusion Develop carbon sequestration methods Manage the nitrogen cycle Provide access to clean water Restore and improve urban infrastructureRestore and improve urban infrastructure Advance health informatics Engineer better medicines Reverse-engineer the brain Prevent nuclear terror Secure cyberspace Enhance virtual reality Advance personalized learning Engineer the tools of scientific discovery

YEAR LONG PROJECT It is estimated that by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) that 780 million people in the world lack access to clean water [1]. Furthermore, over 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related causes, 99% of which occur in developing worlds [2]. You and your team have been called upon to help address this issue. The goal of your project is to build a water distillation system that runs entirely on solar energy via solar collection and can be easily distributed to developing worlds. As a team, use your knowledge of the various material properties covered in class (reflectivity, stress-strain, conductivity…etc.) to come up with a design that:  Effectively distills water  Is easily assembled  Is cost effective 1.Estimated with data from WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) for Water Supply and Sanitation. (2012). Progress on Sanitation and Drinking-Water, 2012 Update.Progress on Sanitation and Drinking-Water 2.World Health Organization (WHO). (2008). Safer Water, Better Health: Costs, benefits, and sustainability of interventions to protect and promote health; Updated Table 1: WSH deaths by region, 2004.Safer Water, Better Health: Costs, benefits, and sustainability of interventions to protect and promote healthWSH deaths by region In addition to building your system, you will be required to write a 2 page report. The report will not only require you to explain your thought process in coming up with the design, but will also require a step-by-step instruction manual on the assembly of your system. Furthermore, it will require a detailed materials list for your system and cost of each item.
