UNIT 9: Adaptations Lesson 1

Adaptations are characteristics that help living things to survive  A physical adaptation is an adaptation to a body part.  A behavioral adaptation is something an organism does to help it survive.

Physical Adaptations The shape of this bird’s foot is best for grasping and holding its prey. This physical adaptation is best for surviving in a water environment.

Physical Adaptations This bird’s beak is the best shape for cracking open hard seeds and cutting off pieces of fruit. This bird’s beak is best for catching fish in the water. This bird’s long beak enables it to obtain nectar from deep inside a flower.

Behavioral Adaptations When an animal feels threatened it may…  Run away  Growl  Roll over  Become stiff drool  Change its breathing These are all examples of behavioral adaptations.

Arctic Hare In the arctic, there is often snow on the ground. Many animals, such as this arctic hare, are able to change their coloration to blend in with their surroundings. The thick, white fur of the arctic hare best helps it to survive in its environment.

Adaptations that help animals survive in the winter…  Growing thick fur  Hibernating  Gathering and storing food

Plant Adaptations Dandelion Strong thick roots – anchor the plant in the ground firmly Light fluffy seeds – helps dandelions spread to many locations Green leaves – provide food

Plant Adaptations In a tundra environment, plant growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons. Look at the different plants in the chart to the left? Which plant do you think is best adapted to grow in a tundra environment? Answer: Plant B Do you know how each of these plant adaptations benefit the plant? A computer is a good tool to use to research and learn about the benefits of each adaptation.
