Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi INTRODUCTION The old adage of 'publish or perish' is very pertinent in the present scenario. Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact As publications have system-maintaining roles in their respective sciences, additional motivations for researchers to write and publish their research work are (Stock, 2000) are follows: Scientific communication: O’Connor(1995) points out that this is essential if science is to progress Ideal and legal protection of intellectual property; Gaining reputation; publish to achieve many citationsThinking in economic measures, ‘sale to achieve high prices’ may be transformed to ‘ publish to achieve many citations ’ (economic theory of science). Stock, W.G. (2000) ‘Was ist eine Publikation? Zum Problem der Einheitenbildung in der Wissenschaftsforschung’, in Fuchs Kittowski, K., Laitko, H., Parthey, H. and Umstätter, W. (Eds): Wissenschaftsforschung Jahrbuch 1998, Verlag für Wissenschaftsforschung, Berlin, pp.239–282 (in German). O’Connor, M. (1995) Writing Successfully in Science, Chapman & Hall, London. WHY TO PUBLISH??

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Scientific community requires metrics to gauge the impact and productivity of research. Citations in other journal articles are generally accredited measure of scientific impact. Citations are the basis for metrics like the H-Index (Hirsche JE 2005, ) and its derivatives, which are used to evaluate the efficiency and impact of individual researchers, or the impact factor, which is used to evaluate the scientific impact of journals (Garfield E 2006) Hirsch JE. An index to quantify an individual's scientific research output. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2005 Nov 15;102(46): ‎Garfield E. The history and meaning of the journal impact factor. JAMA 2006 Jan 4; 295(1): INTRODUCTION Calculate Your Academic Footprint

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi INTRODUCTION Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Hirsch argues: “I propose the index h, defined as the number of papers with citation number ≤ h, as a useful index to calculate the scientific output of a researcher” (2005). Note that the h-index is one of many available bibliometric measures. Hirsch JE. An index to quantify an individual's scientific research output. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2005 Nov 15;102(46): CITATION?? To manually calculate your h-index, organize articles in descending order, based on the number of times they have been cited. For example, an author has 8 papers that have been cited 33, 30, 20, 15, 7, 6, 5 and 4 times. This tells us that the author's h- index is 6. What does an h-index of 6 mean? An h-index of 6 means that this author has published at least 6 papers that have each recieved at least 6 citations. Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar can also be used to calculate an h-index for that particular citation-tracking database.

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi AIM & PURPOSE Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact recommendations for promoting own research This presentation will provide recommendations for promoting own research using newer channels that will offer a direct way to reach readership and that will consequence in an increased usage and citation of an article / scientific work.

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi MATERIALS & METHODS Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Hand search, pubmed and other sources of data was searched for knowing opinions and recommendations of various scientist to promote own work. Data was compiled in narrative format and merged with personal experience of author.

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Increase your academic footprint Tell Do Show easy: Keep the title and key words easy, simple, understandable at they will be pivotal when the author is searching for relevant support articles. Personal Experience: Use your keywords and phrases in your title and repeatedly in your abstract. Repeating keywords and phrases will increase the likelihood your paper will be at the top of a search engine list, making it more likely to be read / cited. RESULTS

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Increase your academic footprint Self Citation: you can self cite your own relevant work in the manuscript. This will not only add to your citation index but also establish your authority over a particular subject. Diana Epstein. Impact factor manipulation, The Journal of the European Medical Writers Association 2007; Vol. 16, No. 3. While self-citation of relevant papers is legitimate, excessive self- citation can indicate a manipulation. Thomson Reuter’s resource known as Web of Science, the company which now lists journal impact actors, considers self-citation to be acceptable up to a rate of 20%, anything over that is considered suspect. (Diana Epstein 2007) RESULTS

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Increase your academic footprint Share your data: There is evidence that sharing data / research work can increase citations. Consider posting to data sharing websites, such as figshare or SlideShare, or contributing to Wikipedia and providing links to your published manuscripts.. Personal Experience: Many authors have Wikipedia as the starting point for their research. Search for pages that are related to your own article and add your article as a reference. If relevant page is not present, you can create one. RESULTS

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Increase your academic footprint Make your manuscript easily accessible: If your paper is not published in an open-access journal, post your pre- or post-publication prints to a repository. Check SHERPA RoMEO to find your publisher’s copyright and self-archiving policies regarding sharing your published manuscript. Personal Experience: Publish articles in open-access journal- this increases viewership RESULTS

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Increase your academic footprint Consistent and correct identity: Using the same name on all of your papers will make it easier for others to find all of your published work. If your name is very common, consider getting a research identifier, such as an ORCID or a ResearcherID. You can provide your ResearcherID in your signature and link that ID to your publication list so that anyone you has access to your publications. Check that your name and affiliation are correct on the final proofs of your manuscript and check that the paper’s information is accurate in database searches. RESULTS

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Increase your academic footprint Socialize for promotion: Include your papers on your websites, LinkedIn profile, face book or other communities. Also start to blogging and simulate debate on the area of concern. Eg: Facebook, Twitter, Academia.edu, ResearchGate, Mendeley RESULTS

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Increase your academic footprint Do what I am doing Present your work at conferences. Although conference presentations are not cited by other others, this will make your research more visible to the academic and research communities. RESULTS

Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Effective and ethical strategies to improve research impact Conclusion citation marketing Foremost focus of authors should be on investigation and writing good papers. Knowing current citation system has disadvantage and should be enhanced (Eysenbach G 2011), we should also consider to advertise our publications a little bit (ethically); let’s label it as “citation marketing”. As recommended for the authors should adopt ethical methods to boost their citations. Eysenbach G. Can Tweets Predict Citations? Metrics of Social Impact Based on Twitter and Correlation with Traditional Metrics of Scientific Impact J Med Internet Res 2011;13(4):e123
