Presentation transcript:

Food groups refers to a method of classification for the various foods that humans consume in their everyday lives, based on the nutritional properties of these types of foods and their location in a hierarchy of nutrition.foods humansnutrition There are various systems of dividing foods into groups to develop models of optimum nutrition for humans. Among these systems are the USDA's program titled MyPyramid, the Healthy eating pyramid published by the Harvard School of Public Health, the Canadian Government's Canada's Food Guide, the United Kingdom Food Standards Agency's "Balance of Good Health" guide, and others.nutritionUSDAMyPyramidHealthy eating pyramidHarvard School of Public HealthCanada's Food Guide

A balanced diet must contain carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, mineral salts and fibre. It must contain these things in the correct proportions. BBread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta FFats, Oils and Sweets FFruits MMeat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs, and Nuts MMilk, Yogurt, and Cheese VVegetables WWhat is physical activity?

Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta

Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs, and Nuts

Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese

Remember:  Eating a healthy diet is all about getting the balance right.  A variety foods should be chosen from each of the main food groups in the proportions shown  It is not necessary to achieve this balance at each meal but can apply to the food eaten over a day or even a week.  There are no healthy or unhealthy foods, only healthy or unhealthy diets.  Many dishes contain more than one food, so think about how each of the main ingredients contribute to your overall intake. For example, a pizza can contain a starchy base, with vegetables, meat and cheese on top.
