Active Participles

Active Participles The first Hebrew verb form we will learn is the participle. Hebrew, like English, has two types of participles: active and passive. In English, when we want to form an active participle we add “-ing” to the end of a word. For example: the running man or the man is running. The active participle acts just like an adjective and can be used attributively or predicatively. For example: Attributive: הָאִישׁ הָהׂלֵךְ the walking man (or) the man who is walking Predicative: הָאִישׁ הׂלֵךְ the man is walking Note that the attributive takes the definite article but the predicative does not.

Active Participles ֶת or ָה ִים וֹת Just like nouns and adjectives, participles have a number and gender that is demonstrated by their endings. Masculine Feminine Singular No special ending ֶת or ָה Plural ִים וֹת * Note the additional ending for the feminine singular. In addition to endings that indicate number and gender, the active participle has one other indicator. The first vowel of an active participle is always either a holem ׂׂ or a full holem וׂ. The meaning of the active participle is one of continuing action or progress. Translate active participles in the present tense or immediate future. For example: הָאִישׁ הׂלֵךְ the man is walking (or) the man is going to walk the man walks
