Historical Arthur The legendary King Arthur, as we know him, never existed. There was a war leader from the late 5 th century or early 6 th century who is generally accepted as the “Arthur” figure. This historical Arthur was probably Welsh, Celtic, or Breton

The Legend Begins *Legend- popular stories about the past that have been handed down for generations. Most legends have some basis in historical fact. A legend focuses on the life and adventure of legendary heroes, or characters who are human yet “larger than life.” A legend will have a deep concern with right and wrong. A legend will show support for feelings of national pride. The legend of King Arthur is an ancient story, and there are many variations. Stories of the historical Arthur were told for centuries, often passed on by storytellers. These stories grew and changed until Arthur was not only a strong warrior but also a great king.
