PAKAIAN TRADISIONAL MELAYU

Baju Melayu Baju Melayu merupakan satu panggilan bagi baju tradisional Melayu yang biasa di pakai oleh golongan lelaki di Malaysia dan negara serantau. Ia biasanya terbahagi kepada dua jenis utama, iaitu baju Melayu potongan Teluk Belanga dan potongan Cekak Musang.

BAJU CEKAK MUSANG

Baju Melayu potongan Cekak Musang terkenal di kawasan tengah dan utara Malaysia. Potongan tersebut merujuk kepada cara jahitan pada leher baju tersebut, potongan Cekak Musang berbentuk seperti leher baju India hanya bahagian penutup atau rumah butangnya bertindan.

Songkok A jet-black or dark coloured headgear called the songkok can also worn to complete the attire.

Kain Samping A skirt-type adornment is also commonly worn with the Baju Melayu, which is either the "kain samping", made out of songket cloth or thekain sarung, made out of cotton or a polyester mix. Both are loops of fabric which are folded around the wearer's waist.

Kain Samping In shirts made with the cekak musang collar, the placket of the baju will seem to form a third of the baju from the top when it is worn beneath the kain samping or kain sarung. However, the hem line of the baju actually runs to the middle of the lap.

Kancing The placket typically has three to four buttonholes and is fastened together by dress studs called kancing. The kancing or studs usually have screw-in backs and can be made from a variety of materials including gold, silver and precious or semi-precious stones. The studs may also be connected with a light metal chain which will be concealed behind the shirt when the placket is fastened.

BAJU MELAYU TELUK BELANGA

Baju Melayu Teluk Belanga Baju Melayu Teluk Belanga is more popular in the Southern states of Malaysia, mainly Johor. Here, the kain samping or kain sarung is worn below the baju rather than above it.

The baju itself does not have the cekak musang collar or any placket. Instead, the opening is hemmed with stiff stitching called tulang belut (literally eel's spine) and ends with a small loop at the top of one side to fit a singular kancing (similar to the collars of Baju Kurung worn by women).

BAJU KURUNG

The baju kurung is one of the more popular type of costume compared to the others. It is a form of costume that covers the body and looks presentable.

BAJU KURUNG The baju kurung associates to the more courteous and shy section of the Malay community. Furthermore, it covers the whole body, exposing the face and hands only, which which abides by the Islamic dress code.

A baju kurung is a loose-fitting full length dress, consisting of a skirt and a blouse. The skirt is made from a long cloth with foldings on one side; called ‘ombak mengalun’.

The blouse is collarless, has long sleeves, and extends to between the hips and knees.

A woman will often wear a baju kurung with a headscarf (a tudung).

A few variations of baju kurung include the baju kurung labuh, baju kurung moden, baju kurung cekak musang, baju kurung Kedah etc. Even though it has changed, its style still stays the same.

BAJU KEBAYA

The baju kebaya is also one of the favourites among the traditional Malay costumes especially during the 1960s. Baju kebaya is usually made according to the wearer’s size. A person with a lean body is fit to wear the baju kebaya for public gatherings.

The baju kebaya is worn with the kain songket or batik. The kebaya (the upper part of this dress) which is usually tight- fitting and short, is nowadays worn as a loose-fitting costume and does not usually be the wearer’s size.

Nowadays, the baju kurung and baju kebaya can be found in lots of forms. It has evolved with the wearer’s taste and the flow of time.
