Giving Back A sequel to The Giving Tree Written by Bobby Green Illustrated by Ted Brown Published by The NET Section, CDI, EDB PPT2 Front Cover

One day, a boy came to the Giving Tree. He looked exactly like the boy whom the Giving Tree once loved. “My grandfather told me about you. He said his happy childhood memories were with you. Our cosy house was made from your branches!” said the boy excitedly. The tree was happy. PPT2 1

The boy looked around and he noticed other tree stumps. “Were all these trees used to make boats and houses too?” asked the boy. “No, they were cut down for different reasons. Some were used to produce wood and paper products. Others were cleared for urban development like roads and buildings,” explained the Giving Tree. 2

“People take so much from trees but we never give anything back,” said the boy, feeling ashamed. “We are happy to help but we are worried that there will be no trees left to help future generations,” sighed the Giving Tree. PPT2 3

“Trees are important and we can’t live without you!” exclaimed the boy. “You are right! Through photosynthesis, we take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the air so that people and animals can breathe, ” explained the Giving Tree. PPT2 4

“However, there are not enough trees. Humans are now producing more carbon dioxide than we need,” sighed the Giving Tree. “We can plant more trees!” suggested the boy. “Do you know it takes trees many years to grow tall?” said the Giving Tree. PPT2 5

The boy lowered his head. He did not know where to look. “You should tell more people about how important trees are. The more people know about trees, the more they will do to help us!” said the Giving Tree. The boy sat on the stump and thought for a long time… PPT2 6

The boy could not sleep that night so he made a huge poster about trees. The next day, he took it to school and showed it to his teachers and classmates. Together they discussed ways to save trees. PPT2 7

The boy and his friends planted many trees in the schoolyard. The boy told the Giving Tree all about it. The tree was happy again. PPT2 8

Trees have always helped people, but now trees are in a lot of trouble. A boy decides to do something. Read this book to find out what he does. “Read it!
