Higher education: It refers to American education on the college level. American higher education includes four categories of institutions. They are the university, the four-year undergraduate institution( the college), the technical training institution and the two-year or community college. Some are supported by public funds and some by private funds. Many universities and colleges have won reputations for providing their students with a higher quality of education: The great majority are generally regarded as,quite satisfactory. A few other institutions provide only adequate education.

Selecting a College or University Questions to think about when Americans choose a university or college?

School’s entrance requirements and its fees What degrees does the school offer? How long does it take to earn one? What curricula does a college or university offer? What are the requirements for earning a degree? Is the college or university a public institution or a private one? If it is private, is it a religious school? How large is the school? Why do the large universities flourish?

Selecting a College or University Both public and private colleges depend on three sources of income: Student tuition Endowments Government funding Harvard Princeton Yale University

The Ivy League is an athletic conference comprising eight private institutions of higher education in the Northeastern United States. The conference name is also commonly used to refer to those eight schools as a group. The eight institutions are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

长春藤联盟 常青藤联合会 The term Ivy League also has connotations of academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism. Ivy League schools are often viewed by the public as some of the most prestigious universities worldwide. Seven of the eight schools were founded during the United States colonial period; except Cornell, which was founded in 1865. All eight schools receive millions of dollars in research grants and other subsidies from federal and state government. Ivy League university financial endowments range from Brown's $2.2 billion to Harvard's $27.4 billion, the largest financial endowment of any academic institution in the world.

Trends in Degree Programs During the 1970s and 1980s there was a trend away from the traditional liberal arts, and instead, students chose major fields that would prepare them for specific jobs. (business and management, computer and information science, education, engineering, health professions, and public affairs) (the trend toward pre-professionalism) Now students are switching back to traditional areas of study. (low point in 1981--- 1987 upswing: English, literature, foreign languages, history, and physics) This new popularity of liberal arts is a return to the early traditions of American education.
