FINDING DENSITY … an activity using mass and volume

What are mass and volume? Mass: A measurement of the amount of matter contained in an object – typically measured in grams ‘g’. Volume: The amount of space an object or substance occupies – typically measured in cm 3 or mL.

What is Density? Density: A comparison of how much matter there is in a certain amount of space. It is a ratio of mass to volume. Density is also a physical property of all matter.

Don’t Forget this Definition 1 g. of H 2 O is defined as 1 cm 3 and 1 mL. Grams ‘g’ is a measure of mass whereas both cm 3 and mL are a measure of volume. 1 g. H 2 O = 1 cm 3 H 2 O = 1 mL H 2 O (at room Temp./Pressure)

Which box has more ‘density’? Box ABox B

Finding Density 1. To determine the density of an object, you need to know both the mass (in g.) and the volume (in cm 3 or mL)

Finding Density 2. Use the following formula to find density: D = m/v (Density = mass divided by volume)

I Density Formula M V

Density Practice Find the density of the following: A rectangular box with a mass of 16 grams and sides of 2 cm, 4 cm and 1 cm.

Density Practice Find the density of the following: A rectangular box with a mass of 16 grams and sides of 2 cm, 4 cm and 1 cm. Mass = 16 g Volume = 2cm x 4cm x 1 cm = 8cm 3 D = m = 16 g = 2 g = 2 g/cm 3 v 8cm 3 1 cm 3

Density Practice Find the density of the following: A square box with sides of 2 cm and a mass of 32 grams.

Density Practice Find the density of the following: A square box with sides of 2 cm and a mass of 32 grams. Mass = 32 g Volume = 2cm x 2cm x 2cm = 8cm 3 D = m = 32 g = 4 g = 4 g/cm 3 v 8cm 3 1 cm 3

Density Practice Find the density of the following: A liquid with a mass of 24 grams and a volume of 48 mL.

Density Practice Find the density of the following: A liquid with a mass of 24 grams and a volume of 48 mL. Mass = 24 g Volume = 48 mL D = m = 24 g = 1 g = 0.5 g/mL v 48mL 2 mL

GATE/AVID Challenge - Density Practice Find the density of the following: Five blocks measuring 1 cm on each side. Each block has a mass of 2 grams.

GATE/AVID Challenge - Density Practice Find the density of the following: Five blocks measuring 1 cm on each side. Each block has a mass of 2 grams. Mass = 2 g. x 5 = 10 g. Volume = 1cm x 1cm x 5cm = 5cm 3 D = 2 g/cm 3

GATE/AVID Challenge - Density Practice Find the density of the following rectangular block: 2 cm x 3 cm x 5 cm Mass = 30 g

GATE/AVID Challenge - Density Practice Find the density of the following: 2 cm x 3 cm x 5 cm Mass = 30 g D = 30g/30 cm 3 = 1 g/cm 3
