Court System Structured as a hierarchy.Structured as a hierarchy.  Some courts are higher then others. Depending on seriousness of offense.Depending on seriousness of offense.  Different courts in the hierarchy will deal with different cases. Two basic types of Court System.Two basic types of Court System. 1.State Courts 2.Federal Courts

State Court State Court Deals with bulk of disputes and offenses.Deals with bulk of disputes and offenses. Three LevelsThree Levels  Magistrates Court (Local Court)  Magistrate decides verdict.  Minor disputes  Civil amounts less than $40,000, theft and drink-driving.  Magistrate will decide if case needs to go to higher court.  District Court  Hears the appeals from the Magistrates.  More Serious Cases such as, Civil Disputes up to $250,000  Criminal offenses such as armed robbery, rape and fraud.  May have judge and/or jury.

State Court Continued State Court Continued  Supreme Court  Highest Court  Two Divisions  Trial Court  Deals with Civil Cases over $250,000  Murder, manslaughter, and serious drug offenses.  Uses a Jury.  Court of Appeal  Deals with cases that have already passed through the lower Courts, because parties was not satisfied with the result.
