Chapter 5 Objective 2: Writing equations in Standard Form using 2 points

Vocabulary Point-Slope Form = an equation that contains a point (x 1, y 1 ) and a slope (m). y - y 1 = m(x - x 1 )

Vocabulary Standard Form = an equation that contains x and y on the same side. Ax + By = C

Example 1 Write an equation in point-slope form given point (3,4) and slope of -1. y - y 1 = m(x - x 1 )

Example 2 Write an equation in point-slope form given point (2,-6) and slope of ¾. y - y 1 = m(x - x 1 )

Example 3 Write y – 3 = 2(x + 2) in standard form. Ax + By = C

Example 4 Write y + 2 = -1/2(x + 6) in standard form. Ax + By = C

Example 5 Write an equation in standard form for the line containing (2, 4) and m = 4. Steps 1 st – must use point-slope form 2 nd – get x and y on the same side

Example 6 Write an equation in standard form for the line containing (4, 1) and (3, 3). Steps 1 st – find slope 2 nd – use point-slope 3 rd – get x and y on the same side

Example 7 Find the equation of each line given in the graph. Write the equation in standard form. Steps 1 st – find m m = ____

Example 7 Find the equation of each line given in the graph. Write the equation in standard form. Steps 1 st – find m 2 nd – find the first point m = 2/3 (, )

Example 7 Find the equation of each line given in the graph. Write the equation in standard form. Steps 1 st – find m 2 nd – find the first point 3 rd – use m and point for point-slope form m = 2/3(-1, -2) y - y 1 = m(x - x 1 ) y+2 = 2/3 (x+1)

Example 7 Find the equation of each line given in the graph. Write the equation in standard form. Steps 1 st – find m 2 nd – find the first point 3 rd – use m and point for point-slope form 4 th – get x and y on the same side y + 2 = 2/3(x+1)
