Have you… 1. Finished Your Homework? 2. Used the restroom? 3. Quenched your thirst? 4. Sharpened your pencil?

Complete the Warm-Up Label the x- and y-axis Plot and label the following points: -A (-2, 4) -B (5, 6) -C (-7, -3) -D (2.5, -8) State if: -x and y are pos/neg -Quadrant the point is found in

Review the Warm-Up  Plot and label the following points:  A (-2, 4)  B (5, 6)  C (-7, -3)  D (2.5, -8)  State pos/neg  Identify the quadrant

New Rules.. REMEMBER Only four restroom passes per person in Quarter 2 No retakes on chapters 5 & 6 after interims. Behavior Chart

Unit 5 Graphing Linear Equations A. Recognize and describe a line with a slope that is positive, negative, zero, or undefined. B. Find the slope of a line given the graph of a line.

Define: Line  Define line :  The geometric figure formed by _____ points.  A line is the straight path connecting two points and extending beyond the points in both ___________.

Define: Linear Equation  Define linear equation :  An equation that can be written in the form "linear polynomial = linear polynomial" or "linear polynomial = constant".  The following are examples of linear equations: 2x – 3 = 5, 4a + 9 = 8 – 9a, and 2x + 5y = 1.

Let’s ponder… Positive Negative Zero Undefined

Slope As you go up ______, you may feel like you are spending lots of energy to get yourself to move. The __________ the hill, the harder it is for you to keep yourself moving.

Define: Slope  “The slope is the measure of the steepness of a line”.  In real life, we see slope in any direction. However, in math, slope is defined from _________ to _________.

Slope  I repeat we always measure slope going from left to right. This is very important!  There are three types of slope you can encounter. A slope can be positive, negative, or equal to zero. When the slope is equal to zero, we say that there is no slope

Slope Formula #1

Define the following types of slope: Positive SlopeNegative SlopeZero Slope Undefined Slope

Positive Slope  If you go from ______ to _______ and you go up, it is a positive slope

Negative Slope  If you go from _______ to _______ and you go down, it is a negative slope

Zero Slope  Slope of a _____________________ line.  Same y-coordinate

Undefined Slope  Moving _________ up or __________ down only.  NOT MOVING HORIZONTALLY  The slope is at it’s _____________.  Example: elevator  “undefined because you cannot divide by zero”  x-coordinates is the same for both points

The 4 Types of Slope

Practice

Slope can be expressed different ways: A line has a positive slope if it is going uphill from left to right.

Slope can be expressed different ways: A line has a negative slope if it is going downhill from left to right.

When given the graph, it is easier to apply “rise over run”. 1) Determine the slope of the line.

Start with the lower point and count how much you rise and run to get to the other point! Determine the slope of the line. 6 3 run 3 6 == rise Notice the slope is positive AND the line increases!

Determine the slope of the line.

Complete the Worksheet Individually DUE AT THE END OF CLASS
