Affluence: Rich vs Poor States Why are some countries rich while others are poor? That is certainly an interesting question. If we want to be able to answer it, we first need to know the criteria that would allow us to objectively assess the affluence of a country Gross Domestic Product = GDP Gross domestic product = the market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given period.

Affluence: Rich vs Poor States GDP per capita = most widely used measure, it allows us to compare small and big countries (Singapore may have smaller total GDP than China, but people living in Singapore are much richer than people living in China = Singapore’s GDP per capita is higher than China’s List of countries from the richest to the poorest (based on the GDP per capita):
