INTRODUCTION The mass media is a diversified collection of media technologies that reach a large audience by mass communication. The most important ones are Radio, Television, magazines and Newspapers Nowadays the Internet is one of the most important - people can read news or watch TV through it.

England's first news periodicals, called Corantos, circulated in the 1620s. During the next few decades, English notions of the liberty of the press began to develop. This vision helped to inspire more than a century of reform movements that resulted in the gradual elimination of state repression of the press. The most important of these developments include the 1694 act removing pre-publication censorship

Radio Radio in the United Kingdom is dominated by the BBC, which operates in both the UK and abroad. The BBC World Service radio network is broadcast in 33 languages globally. Advances in Digital Radio technology have enabled the launch of several new stations by the Corporation. London’s most popular commercial radio station is the 95.8 CapitalFM.

Television The United Kingdom has no analogue television. A free to air digital service is made up of two chartered public broad casting companies, the BBC and the Channel 4 and two franchised commercial television companies ( ITV and Channel 5) The BBC operates several television channels in the United Kingdom and abroad. BBC World New is broadcast throughout the world.

Internet The UK’s most visited websites are Google, Amazon, Ebay, the BBC online and MailOnline. The first use of the World Wide Web in the UK was during a collaborative project called the Oracle Tools Alliance Program involving the Oracle Corporation. This program began in May Interesting fact: A security company in the UK found in 2011 in schools: 3% have mobile phones 15% use smartphones regularly 10% have an iphone 5% have an ipad 16% have a laptop 8% have a social network account 50% don’t have parental controls

Newspaper In the 17 th century newspapers appeared and they were published once a week. ( Oxford Gazette) The first English journalist to achieve national importance was Daniel Defoe. During the First World War I ( ) the role of newspapers gained a lot of importance and everyone was expecting to read them.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a British public service broadcaster. It is headquartered at Broadcasting House in London, and is the world's oldest national broadcasting organization and the largest broadcaster in the world by number of employees. Britain's first live public broadcast from the Marconi factory in Chelmsford took place in June It started as a private company in 1923 and it changed to a public service corporation and business in It offers a lot of services such as television, radio, news, internet, music and more.

BBC versus other media The success of broadcasting provoked animosities between the BBC and well established media such as theatres, concert halls and the recording industry. By 1929, the BBC complained that the agents of many comedians refused to sign contracts for broadcasting, because they said it harmed the artist "by making his material stale" and that it "reduces the value of the artist as a visible music-hall performer"

Criticism and controversies The BBC has faced various accusations regarding many topics: the Iraq war, politics, ethics and religion, as well as funding and staffing. It also has been involved in numerous controversies because of its different, sometimes very controversial coverage of specific news stories and programming.

Most read newspapers

Influenced newspapers Political parties certainly have historically thought so, and had invested enormous resources into controlling the message during campaigns. Newspapers in the UK have no such restrictions on editorial, and have all traditionally been taking part in their approach to politics. In all that time the Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail have never supported Labour during elections, and the Daily Mirror has never supported any party except Labour.
