Block 3 Do Now Hand in tableau reflection (in my basket) Then, respond in your reading section… Review: What is a monologue? A soliloquy is very similar to a monologue, with one slight difference. What might this difference be? Can you think of any monologues/soliloquies from movies, T.V. shows, plays, etc. that you’ve seen? Describe them.

Block 4 Do Now Hand in tableau reflection (in my basket) Then get a textbook and open up to page 612 (Act 2, Scene 2)

Block 4: Respond in your reading section Review: What is a monologue? A soliloquy is very similar to a monologue, with one slight difference. What might this difference be? Can you think of any monologues/soliloquies from movies, T.V. shows, plays, etc. that you’ve seen? Describe them.

Examples Watch the following two videos. One is a monologue and one is a soliloquy. Pay attention to what is different about each video. Then guess: Which one is the monologue and which one is the soliloquy? “Mean Girls” (2004) 1:10 mins “Stand By Me” (1986)

Monologue “mono” = one “logue” = speech A speech delivered by one character (in a play, movie, T.V. show, etc.) to one or more other characters “The Notebook” (2004) 50 secs

Soliloquy A speech delivered by one character directly to the audience Other characters cannot hear these words Often represents thoughts in a character’s mind “American History X” (1998)

Assignment Find a partner Find a monologue or soliloquy from The Diary of Anne Frank (Act 1-Act 2, Scene 2) Speeches must be at LEAST 8 lines of FULL text. NOT including stage directions. *8 lines is an absolute MINIMUM. There are choices that are significantly longer than this. Answer the questions on the worksheet to analyze this speech One of you must be prepared to perform this speech for the class

Now Write Your Own! Choose a character from The Diary of Anne Frank. Write an original monologue/soliloquy from this character’s point of view. Maintain the character’s personality traits. In other words, your speech should “sound” like your character. Briefly explain when in the play this would occur, contextually. EX: “In the first scene, right before Miep gives Otto the diary” OR “After Anne and Peter have their first kiss,” etc. Do something NEW and ORIGINAL in your speech. Don’t just paraphrase/repeat something that was already said in the play. Length: about one page handwritten (average sized handwriting, average sized spacing, filling the whole page) Due: Monday, 4/18
