PUBLIC SERVICES Third sector organisations have contracts with government to deliver public services For example in: social care drug and alcohol rehabilitation helping offenders find employment and accommodation recycling and environment
VOLUNTEERING Large volunteering organisations eg Volunteering England, Community Services Volunteers, BTCV, WRVS, V. High levels of volunteering in UK But, volunteering amongst younger people is not as high, so Government set up V. to create 1 million new volunteering Opportunities for 18 to 25 year olds
CAMPAIGNING & ADVOCACY Many third sector organisations exist just to campaign for social change. Eg- climate change - smoking in public places - cruelty to animals - conservation - access for disabled people
Social Enterprise Business which re-invest their profits in the community Fair Trade Fifteen, Divine Chocolate, Coin Street 60,000 social enterprises in England
COMMUNITY GROUPS 600,000 community organisations in UK Community centres where local activities are provided for people eg -nursery places -classes in improving skills eg internet -cafes where people can meet -social gatherings eg weddings -giving advice to people about housing, jobs, debt
ROLE OF THE SECTOR IN HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE Future Jobs Fund – young people under 25 unemployed for a year. Third sector organisations advertise jobs and state pays the salary. Must have a community benefit eg environmental, creative, children’s activities, sports coaching. V – volunteering opportunities for young people 18 to 25 Rathbone helping care leavers to improve their skils Foyer helping young offenders find accommodation and jobs Prince’s Trusthelping young people set up their own businesses
